England and Durham fast bowler Brydon Carse was charged by the ECB’s Cricket Regulator on 2 October 2026 under Professional Conduct Regulation 3.2 over events in Derby on 23 August. The charge is part of cricket’s disciplinary process—not a criminal assault charge. Derbyshire Police had closed its separate reported assault investigation with no further action in September. The Cricket Discipline Panel’s decision was still pending on 3 October.
What is Brydon Carse charged with?
The Cricket Regulator alleges that Carse breached Regulation 3.2 of the ECB Professional Conduct Regulations. Sky Sports reported that the rule covers conduct, acts or omissions that are improper, prejudicial to cricket’s interests, or may bring the ECB, cricket or a cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute. The regulator said the charge relates to events in Derby in the early hours of 23 August 2026. Sky Sports
A charge is an allegation for adjudication, not a finding that a rule was broken. The regulator referred the case to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel. The ECB said Carse has an opportunity to respond through the established process and that it would not be appropriate to prejudge the outcome. No panel decision or sanction had been reported by 3 October.

No. The October charge is under cricket conduct regulations; it is not a criminal assault charge. Derbyshire Police closed its reported assault investigation in September with no further action. That police outcome and the ECB disciplinary case are separate processes: the police inquiry has concluded, while the Cricket Discipline Panel still has to adjudicate the regulatory charge. The available reporting does not establish that Carse assaulted anyone. In its earlier account, Sky Sports said his role, if any, in the alleged assault was unclear. The later cricket-regulatory charge does not by itself establish involvement in an assault.
What happened in Derby?
23 August: police attended a venue
Reports said Carse was celebrating with Durham teammates at Molly Malones on the Wardwick in Derby. Derbyshire Police said officers attended in the early hours of Sunday 23 August. According to the police statement reproduced by Al Jazeera/AFP, a man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and then de-arrested after officers took his details. Reporting also said Carse agreed to leave. The arrest was on suspicion; it was not a finding of guilt. Al Jazeera

24–26 August: England selection changes
England left Carse out of the squad for the second Test against Pakistan. Derbyshire Police later confirmed an assault investigation; reporting at the time said no arrests had been made in that inquiry and that Carse’s part, if any, was unclear. Sky News subsequently reported that he was omitted from the third Test and a limited-overs squad as well. These were reported selection decisions, not a final disciplinary penalty. Sky News

Derbyshire Police said its investigation into reports of an assault in Derby city centre had been closed. Al Jazeera/AFP reported the outcome as no further action. This ended the police investigation, but not the separate cricket-regulatory process that followed.

2 October: cricket conduct charge
The Cricket Regulator announced the Regulation 3.2 charge and referral to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel. It said the process was ongoing and it would make no further comment. As of 3 October, the panel had not issued a reported adjudication.
What happens next?
Carse can respond through the established process, after which the independent Cricket Discipline Panel will adjudicate the charge. The regulator has not announced an outcome, and the ECB has said it will not prejudge the case. Until a decision is reported, it is accurate to describe this as a pending allegation under cricket rules—not a proven breach or a criminal charge.

What has been reported about Carse’s cricket career?
Al Jazeera/AFP reported that Carse continued playing for Durham after the incident and helped the team win the County Championship Second Division title. It also reported his omission from England squads after the incident. These details provide context, but they do not determine the panel’s decision.
