Researchers have turned cigarette-filter waste—including smoked cigarette butts—into porous carbon and measured substantial hydrogen uptake in one sample. The key qualification: the reported measurements were made at −196 °C and elevated pressure. They do not show that cigarette butts or a ready-to-use tank can store hydrogen under ordinary conditions.
What did the researchers make?
In a 2017 study, L. Scott Blankenship and Robert Mokaya of the University of Nottingham used fresh cigarette filters and discarded smoked cigarette butts as feedstock for porous carbon. Their process combined hydrothermal carbonisation with activation. The resulting carbons were oxygen-rich and highly porous, with reported values as high as 4300 m² g−1 for surface area and 2.09 cm³ g−1 for pore volume. These are maximum reported material properties, not measurements of the filters in their original form. The paper in Energy & Environmental Science describes the preparation and results.
How much hydrogen did the carbon take up?
The study measured hydrogen uptake at −196 °C (77 K), at pressures up to 40 bar. For SF-4600, the highest-performing smoked-butt-derived sample discussed in the article, the researchers reported the following figures:

“Excess” and “total” uptake are distinct measures reported by the paper; they should not be treated as interchangeable. The 9.4 wt% figure is the total uptake for SF-4600 at 20 bar and −196 °C, not a general capacity for cigarette waste or a result that can be compared fairly with another material unless temperature, pressure, sample type, and uptake measure also match. The paper is the source for the experimental values.

Does this mean cigarette butts can power a hydrogen tank?
No. The experiment shows that a processed carbon made from filter waste can adsorb hydrogen under cryogenic, pressurised laboratory conditions. It does not demonstrate a complete storage system, practical tank performance, consumer use, or operation near room temperature. A material’s uptake measurement is only one part of assessing storage: the study’s reported values alone do not establish how a finished system would perform.
Could the material store hydrogen at room temperature?
The study does not demonstrate room-temperature storage. In a contemporaneous report, Chemistry World quoted energy-storage expert Kondo-François Aguey-Zinsou describing the low-temperature result as impressive, while identifying a key open question: what drives the high capacity, and whether it can be tuned to achieve similar storage closer to ambient conditions. The report also records the researchers’ comments about the measurement conditions. Its comparison of activated-carbon capacities is specifically framed around 77 K and 20 bar, so it should not be read as a comparison under everyday conditions.

What does the result mean for cigarette-butt waste?
The work explores whether a troublesome waste stream can serve as feedstock for a potentially useful material. It does not establish that the conversion process is environmentally beneficial over its full lifecycle, safe at scale, economical to collect, or capable of solving cigarette-butt pollution. Nor does it demonstrate an industrial waste-management system. The 2017 paper includes a background estimate of cigarette and filter waste, but that historical estimate is not a current global statistic.
Independent replication, scale-up, and commercialization status are not established by the cited sources. The result is best understood as a laboratory materials finding: processed cigarette-filter waste produced porous carbon with high measured hydrogen uptake at very low temperature and elevated pressure.
