End of Abyss is a survival-horror action game built around oppressive atmosphere, scanner-assisted exploration, and interconnected areas you revisit as you gain weapons and equipment. Reviews point to a striking world and an intriguing setup, but also to uneven pacing, backtracking, weapon handling, and difficulty spikes. Whether it is worth playing depends largely on how much those exploration and mood strengths outweigh those friction points for you.

What is End of Abyss?

End of Abyss is developed by Section 9 Interactive and published by Epic Games Publishing. The official game page and cited reviews list October 1, 2026 as its release date; GamesRadar lists PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X as platforms, while PlayStation confirms a PS5 edition. Store availability and regional editions can change, so check the relevant platform listing for current details.

The game combines survival-horror atmosphere with exploration and combat. A scanner helps locate energy cores, identify logs, and scan enemies, making information-gathering part of navigating unfamiliar spaces. GamesRadar’s review also emphasizes the risks of exploring areas before they are understood.

What works well?

Atmosphere and environmental design

GamingBolt reviewer Ravi Sinha praises the oppressive atmosphere, art direction, environmental design, and intriguing setup. GamesRadar likewise frames the experience around hazards and uncertainty in unexplored spaces. These qualities give the game’s exploration a clear purpose beyond simply moving between fights.

Exploration with a progression hook

Section 9 co-founder Marcus Ottvall described the intended balance as combat that is simple to pick up, paired with a Metroidvania structure in which new weapons and equipment strengthen the character and open interconnected areas. That design goal helps explain the appeal: returning to a place with better tools can turn exploration into a progression loop rather than a sequence of disconnected corridors. The scanner’s ability to reveal useful information supports that exploratory role.

Where does End of Abyss stumble?

Pacing and backtracking

Sinha says the experience loses momentum through tedious pacing and extensive backtracking. Players who enjoy mapping and revisiting connected spaces may find that structure satisfying; those looking for a consistently forward-moving horror campaign may find the detours slow the tension rather than build it.

Combat, weapons, and difficulty

The combat blends exploration with twin-stick-style action, but Sinha criticizes awkward weapon mechanics and difficulty spikes. That matters because the game’s intended approachable combat does not, in his assessment, always translate into smooth handling or a consistent challenge. The available reviews support treating combat feel and encounter readability as potential sticking points, not as a uniformly successful part of the design.

Is End of Abyss worth playing?

It looks most appealing to players who value atmosphere, environmental storytelling, scanner-led discovery, and interconnected exploration enough to tolerate backtracking and uneven combat. It is a less secure recommendation for players who prioritize tight pacing, intuitive weapons, or a reliably even difficulty curve.

GamingBolt’s PS5 review gives the game 6/10, praising its art direction and setup while criticizing pacing, backtracking, difficulty spikes, and weapons. GamesRadar provides a second critical perspective on its survival-horror structure and exploration, but the cited material does not establish a consensus score. Treat the 6/10 as GamingBolt’s editorial verdict, not a universal rating.
