Enceladus is easier to sample; Europa may have a much larger ocean. Cassini flew through Enceladus’s south-polar plume and sampled ocean-derived gases and ice grains, while Europa’s ocean is strongly supported by spacecraft evidence but lies beneath a thick ice shell. Europa Clipper is on its way to investigate whether environments there could support life. Neither moon has yielded evidence that life is present.
What makes either moon a candidate?
NASA’s basic framework for considering whether a world could support life is whether it has liquid water, useful chemistry, and an energy source. Enceladus and Europa have evidence relevant to all three, but that evidence points to potentially habitable conditions—not to organisms or a confirmed ecosystem. There is no established probability or numerical ranking showing which moon is more likely to host life.
The evidence also differs in kind: Cassini directly sampled material coming from Enceladus, whereas Europa’s ocean is inferred from spacecraft observations beneath its icy surface. NASA describes Europa’s ocean as potentially holding about twice as much water as all of Earth’s oceans combined; this is an estimate, not a measurement by Europa Clipper. NASA’s overview of Europa’s ingredients for life explains the evidence and the remaining questions.

How accessible is the ocean material?
Enceladus: a plume Cassini could sample
Enceladus’s south-polar plumes eject water vapor and icy grains from a global saltwater ocean. Cassini passed through the plume and measured its gases and particles, giving scientists access to ocean-derived material without drilling through the ice. The spacecraft operated at Saturn from 2004 to 2017; later findings come from analysis of its archived data, not new observations.

Europa: an ocean beneath ice
Multiple spacecraft observations strongly support a salty ocean below Europa’s ice, but direct access to that ocean has not been established. Water plumes have been proposed, yet NASA characterizes the reported observations as intriguing but inconclusive. Candidate detections at roughly 50 km and 100 km altitude discussed in NASA’s 2017 account do not establish a persistent plume. Europa should not be described as having an active, confirmed plume comparable to Enceladus’s. NASA’s discussion of the Europa plume candidates outlines why they remain uncertain.
What chemistry and energy have been found?
Enceladus: hydrogen, phosphate, and organic compounds
Cassini detected hydrogen in Enceladus’s plume gases and icy material. NASA notes that hydrogen could take part in chemical reactions that provide energy. This is relevant to habitability, but hydrogen is not evidence of life by itself. Cassini was not designed to detect organisms and did not do so.

A 2023 study of Cassini data identified sodium phosphate signatures in plume ice grains. NASA/JPL reported that laboratory experiments and analysis of those measurements implied phosphate concentrations in Enceladus’s ocean at least 100 times those in Earth’s oceans. That figure is an inference based on grain measurements, laboratory work, and modeling—not a direct measurement of the bulk ocean. NASA/JPL’s 2023 report on phosphorus in Enceladus’s ocean describes the finding.
In a November 2025 report on a study in Nature Astronomy, NASA/JPL described previously undetected organic compounds in fresh plume grains collected by Cassini. The result indicates that complex organic chemistry is present in ocean-derived material, not that the compounds were made by organisms. NASA/JPL’s report on the later analysis of Cassini data gives details.

Europa: plausible energy pathways, chemistry still to characterize
Europa’s flexing under Jupiter’s gravity could supply internal heat and help keep its ocean liquid. Water interacting with a rocky seafloor could potentially produce hydrogen and other chemicals. These processes make Europa scientifically compelling, but key details—including the chemistry of its ocean and the extent of water-rock interaction—remain uncertain. NASA presents these as possible conditions, not confirmed evidence of a living environment.
What will the missions tell us?
Cassini’s legacy at Enceladus
Cassini has finished its mission, but measurements of Enceladus’s plume continue to support new analyses. Its sampling makes Enceladus the clearer target for studying ocean-derived material remotely; it did not test for life, and the material it measured cannot establish that the ocean contains organisms.

Europa Clipper’s reconnaissance
NASA lists Europa Clipper’s arrival at Jupiter for April 2030 and plans 49 close flybys of Europa. The mission launched on October 14, 2024. Its purpose is to assess whether places below Europa’s surface could support life, using repeated observations of the moon and its environment—not to directly detect organisms. Dates and mission plans can change. NASA’s Europa Clipper mission page provides its current stated plan.
Which moon is the stronger search target?
The answer depends on what “stronger” means. Enceladus is the more accessible place to study ocean-derived material because its plume has already been sampled. Europa may contain substantially more water and now has a dedicated reconnaissance mission, but its possible plumes remain unconfirmed and its ocean chemistry is less directly characterized. Neither advantage is a measure of the probability of life.
