To enable JavaScript in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > JavaScript, then select Allowed (recommended). Reload the website afterward. If the control cannot be changed, a work, school, or other device-management policy may be enforcing the setting. If JavaScript is already allowed, Edge’s Enhanced security—especially Strict mode—may be preventing part of the site from working.
Microsoft confirms that JavaScript is supported in Edge. The setting controls whether websites may run JavaScript in the browser; it is separate from Java, browser updates, and Windows 11 developer settings.
Enable JavaScript in Edge: the complete procedure
These steps apply to the current desktop version of Microsoft Edge running on Windows 11. Menu wording can vary slightly between Edge releases, but the control remains in the site-permissions area.

2. Open the More menu
At the upper-right corner of the Edge window, select the More button, shown as three horizontal dots …. This opens Edge’s main command menu.
3. Select Settings
Choose Settings from the More menu. Edge opens its settings page, usually in a new tab.
4. Open Privacy, search, and services
In the settings navigation, select Privacy, search, and services. This section contains browsing privacy controls, security features, and permissions-related controls.
5. Open Site permissions
Find and select Site permissions. Microsoft’s support documentation places this area under Privacy, search, and services. If your Edge build uses slightly different grouping, use the settings-page search box for site permissions.
6. Select All permissions
Within Site permissions, select All permissions. This list groups the individual capabilities that websites can request or use, including JavaScript.
7. Select JavaScript
Choose JavaScript from the permissions list. The resulting page shows Edge’s browser-wide JavaScript permission and, where applicable, controls for individual websites.

Switch back to the tab that reported that JavaScript was disabled, then reload the page. Select the reload button, press Ctrl+R, or press F5. A page that checked the old permission may not detect the change until it is loaded again.
If the site opens correctly after the reload, no additional Windows 11 setting is required. Keep the permission at Allowed unless you have a specific reason to prevent scripts on websites.
How to verify that JavaScript is enabled
The JavaScript page should show Allowed (recommended) as the active choice. That confirms Edge’s general permission, but it does not guarantee that every script on every site will run: a site can have its own permission entry, and Edge security features can change how scripts execute.
- Reopen Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > JavaScript and confirm the Allowed (recommended) state.
- Reload the affected page after making a change. A stale tab can continue displaying the error it received before the permission changed.
- Try the page again in a normal Edge window. This keeps the test focused on the regular browser permission rather than a separate browsing context.
- Use the site’s own sign-in, search, checkout, media, or interactive controls as the practical test. Those functions commonly depend on scripts, whereas a simple text page may appear normal even when a script is blocked.
Microsoft’s official wording is that “JavaScript is supported in the Microsoft Edge web browser.” Support for JavaScript does not mean every website is required to use it, nor does it override an administrator’s policy or Edge’s security configuration.
If the JavaScript switch is unavailable or cannot be changed
When the JavaScript setting is greyed out, immediately switches back, or is missing an ordinary user-control state, the browser may be receiving an administrative configuration. Microsoft warns that JavaScript can be disabled by an administrative setting.

What an administrative setting means
On a work, school, or otherwise managed Windows 11 device, an organization can apply Edge policies. Those policies are designed to keep users from changing particular browser behaviors. The result can look like a local browser problem even though the restriction is intentional and centrally controlled.
What to do on a managed computer
- Confirm that the control is genuinely unavailable rather than simply set to a different value. Return to the JavaScript page and inspect the control itself.
- Note whether the device belongs to an employer, school, library, or other organization. Management can also apply to personally owned devices enrolled in an organization’s management service.
- Contact the organization’s administrator or help desk and explain that the site requires JavaScript. Provide the affected website and the exact state shown in Edge.
- Do not attempt to bypass a policy by editing system settings or installing an alternate browser. The administrator must decide whether the site is permitted and, if appropriate, change the Edge policy.
If the device is not managed and the control is still unavailable, record the Edge version and the wording shown on the JavaScript page before contacting Microsoft or your local support team. The important distinction is whether Edge is enforcing a policy or merely displaying a normal permission choice.
JavaScript is allowed, but the website still does not work
An Allowed (recommended) JavaScript permission rules out one common cause, but Edge has another setting that can affect script execution: Enhanced security.
Check Enhanced security
- Open the Edge More (…) menu and select Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services.
- Find the Security section.
- Review the Enhanced security setting and its mode.
Microsoft explains that Enhanced security disables just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation. In Strict mode, this protection can cause parts of websites not to work as expected even when the ordinary JavaScript permission is enabled.
Use a site-specific exception when appropriate
Edge supports site-specific exceptions for Enhanced security. If one trusted site is affected, prefer an exception for that site rather than changing protection for every website. Use the exception controls presented in the Security settings, enter the affected site as Edge requests, and then reload that site.
Changing the security mode can reduce protection against some browser threats, so treat it as a targeted compatibility decision. If the site works after an exception, leave Enhanced security enabled for other sites and remove the exception if you no longer need it.

Interpret the result
- JavaScript is not Allowed: Correct the JavaScript permission first; Enhanced security is not the primary issue yet.
- JavaScript is Allowed and the site works after a reload: The permission change solved the problem.
- JavaScript is Allowed but Strict Enhanced security affects only portions of the site: The site may depend on behavior affected by disabled JIT compilation. Consider a site-specific exception.
- JavaScript is Allowed, Enhanced security is not affecting the site, and the page still fails: The available evidence does not identify JavaScript permission as the cause. Report the exact site behavior to the site operator or your organization’s support team rather than repeatedly changing the same toggle.
Decision table for the common failure states
| JavaScript permission | Administrator control | Enhanced security | Likely interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Not Allowed | Not indicated | Any mode | Edge is blocking JavaScript through its normal permission. | Select Allowed (recommended), then reload the page. |
| Allowed | Not indicated | Standard or not implicated | The browser-wide permission is correct; the reported error may be stale or unrelated to this setting. | Reload the affected tab and test its interactive controls again. |
| Allowed | Not indicated | Strict | Enhanced security may be disabling JIT compilation that the site expects. | Use a site-specific Enhanced security exception if the site is trusted, then reload. |
| Unavailable, greyed out, or forced back | Likely managed | Any mode | An administrative policy may be overriding the user setting. | Contact the work, school, or device administrator. |
| Allowed | Managed device | Any mode | Another organization policy or site-specific rule may still control behavior. | Give the administrator the site address and the exact Edge settings shown. |
What JavaScript does in Edge
JavaScript is a programming language that websites use for behavior that changes after a page loads. A page can use it to validate a form, update content without a full navigation, operate a web application, process a sign-in flow, or respond to buttons and menus. If Edge blocks JavaScript, the page’s basic text and images may still appear while interactive features fail.
Enabling the Edge permission does not install Java, add a Windows component, or enable a developer tool. It simply allows websites to run JavaScript under Edge’s normal browser rules. Windows 11 does not have a separate system-wide JavaScript switch that replaces the Edge permission.
Because JavaScript is active code, keeping Edge and Windows updated and using Enhanced security where it is compatible with the sites you need is a sensible security posture. The setting should be changed to solve a specific compatibility problem, not because a website asked you to disable unrelated security controls.
Common questions about the setting
Does enabling JavaScript install anything?
No. The change is an Edge permission. It does not download a runtime or modify Windows 11 system files.
Should the setting be Allowed or Blocked?
For ordinary browsing, Microsoft labels Allowed as the recommended state. Blocking JavaScript can prevent interactive sites from functioning, while allowing it lets sites run scripts subject to Edge’s other permissions and security protections.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does one site work while another says JavaScript is disabled?
Sites use JavaScript differently, and a site can also be affected by a specific permission, an organization policy, or Enhanced security. Check the browser-wide JavaScript state first, then check whether Enhanced security in Strict mode affects the failing site.
Can I fix a policy-controlled setting myself?
Not reliably or appropriately. If an administrator controls the setting, the organization must decide whether to change the policy. Contact that administrator with the site and the error details.
Do I need to restart Windows after enabling JavaScript?
No Windows restart is required by this procedure. Reload the affected page after changing the permission; that is the relevant step for making the page test the new state.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Edge is open on the Windows 11 computer.
- The path used is Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > JavaScript.
- The state is Allowed (recommended).
- The affected page has been reloaded.
- If the switch cannot be changed, the device administrator has been contacted.
- If the site still fails, Enhanced security and its Strict mode have been checked, with a site-specific exception considered only for a trusted site.
