There is no universally cheaper or better option. Compare what you would actually pay for an employer plan with the cost of Marketplace coverage after any premium tax credit you qualify for, then weigh expected medical costs, doctors, prescriptions, and when coverage can start. A job-based offer can also limit Marketplace savings, so check eligibility before comparing advertised prices.
Can you get Marketplace savings if your job offers insurance?
Often, an employee cannot receive a Marketplace premium tax credit for months when the employer offers coverage that is both affordable and meets the minimum value standard. Enrolling in the employer plan also generally prevents a premium tax credit for those months. HealthCare.gov says that most job-based plans meet these standards, but ask your employer to confirm the plan’s status and use the Marketplace application for an eligibility determination. HealthCare.gov explains how job-based coverage affects a Marketplace plan.
Check the 2026 affordability test
For 2026, employer coverage is generally considered affordable for the employee when the employee’s share of the premium for the lowest-cost self-only plan that meets minimum value is less than 9.96% of household income. This is a plan-year threshold, not a permanent percentage. Compare the employee contribution—not the employer’s total premium contribution—with the threshold. HealthCare.gov defines affordable coverage and gives the 2026 percentage.

A plan generally meets minimum value when it is designed to pay at least 60% of the total allowed costs for a standard population and includes substantial coverage for physician and inpatient hospital services. That 60% is a standard-plan design measure; it does not mean the plan will pay 60% of your personal bills. See HealthCare.gov’s minimum value definition.

Assess each household member separately
The employee’s affordability test generally uses the cost of self-only coverage. Family members may be assessed using the cost of family coverage, so an offer that is affordable for the worker may not be affordable for everyone in the household. A spouse or child might qualify for Marketplace savings even if the employee does not. Eligibility depends on the household’s circumstances and is determined person by person through the application. Report the employer offer accurately; income alone does not settle eligibility when job-based coverage is available. Review HealthCare.gov’s guidance for employees and family members.
Compare the actual cost of each option
Do not decide by comparing an employer plan’s gross premium with a Marketplace plan’s advertised premium. The employer generally will not contribute toward a Marketplace plan, and a displayed Marketplace price may depend on tax-credit eligibility. Compare the net cost and coverage of the specific options available to your household and ZIP code.

| Compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Premium | Your monthly share of the employer premium, after the employer contribution, versus the Marketplace premium after any tax credit you are eligible to receive. |
| Routine and expected care | Deductible, copayments, coinsurance, referral rules, and expected medical and prescription spending. |
| High-use year | The out-of-pocket maximum and how much you could owe for covered, in-network care before reaching it. Premiums and costs for services that are not covered generally do not count toward that maximum. |
| Access | Whether your doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies are in network, and whether your medicines are covered at an acceptable cost. |
| Timing | Whether enrollment is open, the deadline, and the date coverage would begin. |
For the employer plan, request its Summary of Benefits and Coverage, premium contribution, provider directory, drug formulary, and enrollment deadline. Compare those with current Marketplace plan details for your location and coverage year. Marketplace plan previews are estimates; the completed application provides the actual eligibility and price determination. Benefits, prices, and savings can change each year. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose based on your care needs, not just the premium
- Estimate likely annual spending. Add the premiums you would pay to your expected out-of-pocket costs for medical care and prescriptions. Consider a separate high-use scenario using the plan’s out-of-pocket maximum.
- Confirm your providers and medicines. A lower premium may not be worthwhile if a key doctor or hospital is out of network or a medicine is not covered on favorable terms.
- Check plan rules. Compare deductibles, copays, coinsurance, referrals, and other limits in the plan documents rather than assuming plans with similar premiums work alike.
- Use the correct subsidy price. Count a Marketplace tax credit only if you are eligible based on your household and employer offer. Do not assume an advertised credit applies to you.
The better fit depends on your actual plans, household eligibility, expected care, and access needs. An employer contribution alone does not prove the work plan costs less overall, just as an advertised tax credit does not prove a Marketplace plan will be cheaper.

Check enrollment dates before switching
Federal Marketplace Open Enrollment generally runs from November 1 through January 15. Enrolling by December 15 generally means coverage can begin January 1; enrolling later during the window generally means a February 1 start. Outside Open Enrollment, a qualifying life event—such as losing job-based coverage—may allow a Special Enrollment Period. The precise deadline and effective date depend on the event and Marketplace determination. State-based Marketplaces may have their own details, so confirm dates for your location. Check federal Marketplace dates and deadlines.
If you choose the employer plan, follow its enrollment deadline. If you plan to switch to Marketplace coverage, confirm eligibility and the new plan’s effective date before cancelling existing coverage; otherwise, you could create a gap. Medicaid and CHIP applications are accepted year-round.

Account for an employer HRA
Some employers offer an Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA) or a Qualified Small Employer HRA (QSEHRA), rather than—or alongside—a traditional group plan. The arrangement type changes how it coordinates with Marketplace tax credits, so do not apply the ordinary group-plan comparison without checking the employer’s notice.
For 2026, an ICHRA is considered affordable when the employee’s monthly cost for the lowest-cost self-only Silver Marketplace plan after the HRA reimbursement is below 9.96% of one-twelfth of household income. An affordable ICHRA offer generally blocks premium tax credits even if the employee declines the HRA. If the offer is unaffordable, the employee may have a choice between the HRA and tax credits, subject to the rules for declining the HRA. QSEHRA coordination follows different rules. Use the employer’s HRA notice and the Marketplace application to determine the available options. Read HealthCare.gov’s ICHRA guidance.
