NI mioDAQ is Emerson’s USB data acquisition family for engineers who need a compact desktop instrument for electronic-product development, validation, and automated test benches. Announced on September 17, 2024, it combines analog inputs and outputs, digital I/O, and counters in a bus-powered device, with four models that differ substantially in resolution, sampling speed, and channel count.

What is NI mioDAQ?

NI mioDAQ is a family of USB data acquisition (DAQ) devices, not one fixed configuration. A DAQ device converts electrical signals into data a computer can record and analyze; mioDAQ can also generate analog signals and handle digital I/O and counter tasks. Emerson positioned the family as a streamlined, bus-powered option for engineers developing and testing complex electronic products. Emerson’s September 2024 announcement describes the launch and its intended use.

Across the family, Emerson lists up to 32 analog input channels, four high-speed analog outputs, 16 flexible digital lines, and four counters. Those are family-wide maximums, not capabilities available together on every model. The four specific configurations are listed in the September 2024 NI mioDAQ brochure.

Which NI mioDAQ model should you choose?

Choose based on how many signals you need to read, whether they must be sampled simultaneously, the resolution and speed required, and how many analog outputs you need. The USB-6421 and USB-6423 use one ADC and acquire nonsimultaneously; the USB-6451 and USB-6453 use multiple ADCs for simultaneous acquisition. The brochure recommends differential wiring for best-quality measurement.

Model (part number) Analog inputs Maximum input sampling ADC and acquisition Resolution Analog outputs
USB-6421 (789887-01) 16 single-ended / 8 differential 250 kS/s maximum on one channel 1 ADC; nonsimultaneous 16-bit 2
USB-6423 (789882-01) 32 single-ended / 16 differential 250 kS/s maximum on one channel 1 ADC; nonsimultaneous 16-bit 4
USB-6451 (789888-01) 16 single-ended / 8 differential 1 MS/s per channel on 8 channels 8 ADCs; simultaneous 20-bit 2
USB-6453 (789884-01) 32 single-ended / 16 differential 1 MS/s per channel on 16 channels 16 ADCs; simultaneous 20-bit 4

All four models have 16 digital I/O channels and four counters. The USB-6451 and USB-6453 also offer a multiplexed mode for higher channel counts; consult the manual for the operating details before designing around that mode.

When a USB-6421 or USB-6423 fits

These 16-bit models are the family’s nonsimultaneous options, with a stated maximum of 250 kS/s on one channel. The USB-6421 provides the lower input and output counts; the USB-6423 doubles those counts to 32 single-ended or 16 differential inputs and four analog outputs. Consider them when channel count or output count is the priority and the specified nonsimultaneous acquisition meets the test’s timing needs.

When a USB-6451 or USB-6453 fits

These 20-bit models acquire simultaneously across their specified channel sets: 1 MS/s per channel on eight channels for the USB-6451, or on 16 channels for the USB-6453. They are the options to evaluate when aligned readings across channels, higher per-channel sampling, or greater resolution matter. The USB-6453 also provides the family’s larger input count and four analog outputs.

What can NI mioDAQ measure and control?

The brochure gives concrete examples involving low-voltage electrical signals and bench-level control. These examples describe possible applications, not proof that every model is appropriate for every sensor, signal range, or test setup.

  • Read signals from linear potentiometers, PWM sources, low-voltage current sensors, and low-voltage potential transformers.
  • Read and write TTL digital lines, drive low-current relays, and generate PWM signals.
  • Generate ±10 V control or simulated-sensor signals, and synchronize voltage, digital, and counter signals.

DAQ systems more broadly are used to capture and analyze voltage, current, temperature, strain, and vibration in product validation, manufacturing test, and research, as described in Emerson’s Test & Measurement overview. That category-level description should not be read as confirmation that every mioDAQ model can directly support every sensor or measurement environment; check the model specifications and required signal conditioning for the job.

Does NI mioDAQ work with LabVIEW or Python?

Emerson says mioDAQ supports FlexLogger Lite for data logging and integrates with NI LabVIEW and the LabVIEW+ suite for lab and manufacturing test systems. The announcement also names C/C++, C#, and Python support. For Python, Emerson describes a command-line package script and points users to an open-source package with more than 50 example programs.

Calibration intervals and installation options

Emerson’s launch materials say guaranteed specifications cover two- and ten-year calibration cycles. The brochure describes two years for typical lab and validation use and ten years for OEM or deployed uses where field calibration is difficult or not required. These are manufacturer-published specification intervals and intended use cases, not independent calibration recommendations.

Listed accessories include a spare 2 m locking USB-C cable (789956-02), an optional right-angle USB-C cable (789957-02), a spring-terminal backshell (785080-01), and a front-mount spring-terminal connector (785502-01). Mounting options include vertical DIN/panel/keyhole, horizontal DIN, and 19-inch rack kits.

What the announcement establishes—and what it does not

The published material establishes the family’s model-specific specifications and the manufacturer’s intended desktop and test-bench uses. It does not provide independent comparative performance results or demonstrate that a particular model is suitable for a specific application. Verify the exact model’s input limits, signal-conditioning needs, timing requirements, wiring, and software support against the test design before selecting it. Emerson’s announcement quotes Ritu Favre, group president of its Test and Measurement business, saying the team aimed to simplify setup and save engineers time; that is the company’s stated goal, rather than an independently measured result.
