This “Emergency IT” cyberdeck is a reported maker build, not a certified emergency product. Its design combines a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 8GB, a second Pi kept as a cold spare, HackRF One software-defined radio, offline reference libraries, and battery power inside a Pelican 1400 case. The maker reported 48 hours of operation after a two-hour charge, but no independent test data or test conditions were published.
What the reported cyberdeck contains
Hackster’s report by Gareth Halfacree attributes the design to a pseudonymous maker identified as Modding. The active computer is a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with 8GB of memory. A second Raspberry Pi is mounted in the case as a stored replacement. Velcro mounting supports the quick-change concept, but the report does not describe automatic failover, live synchronization, or a measured recovery-time objective.
| Subsystem | Reported equipment or content | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Compute | Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 8GB plus a second Pi | The second board is a manual cold spare, not a failover cluster. |
| Display and input | 7-inch touchscreen, foldable keyboard and mouse | Provides a self-contained local interface. |
| Radio | HackRF One SDR | Supports receive and transmit functions; lawful use depends on the task, frequency, power and jurisdiction. |
| Connectivity and interfaces | USB 3 hub, 10 m Ethernet cable, USB Wi-Fi dongle with packet-injection support, card reader and GPS receiver | Expands networking, storage and field-integration options while increasing power and cable-management demands. |
| Microcontroller | Arduino Mega | Adds a platform for interfacing with external electronics. |
| Offline knowledge | English and Japanese image-inclusive Wikipedia, StackOverflow, first-aid videos in two languages, shelter-building and knot-tying videos, and children’s television | Useful when internet access is unavailable, provided the storage and archive versions fit the build. |
| Enclosure | Pelican 1400 case with Velcro-mounted boards | The maker describes the case as waterproof and buoyant when filled; those statements apply to this reported configuration, not every Pelican case or cyberdeck. |
Modding explained the component choices this way: “I specced it to interface with things that I know. I’m sure someone else would have a serial interface in there, etc. But these are the technologies that I am good with.” The build therefore favors familiar, replaceable interfaces over a universal equipment list.
Does “dual redundant” mean automatic failover?
No. In the documented design, redundancy means keeping a second Raspberry Pi ready for a manual swap. It is best described as a cold spare. The report does not establish synchronized storage, automatic detection of a failed board, uninterrupted service, or a guaranteed restoration time.

What a practical replacement procedure requires
- Shut down the active Pi cleanly whenever it is still responsive.
- Disconnect power and label or photograph the display, hub, network and radio connections.
- Move the storage media or install a prepared, tested duplicate image in the spare Pi.
- Reconnect peripherals and verify the touchscreen, keyboard, network, GPS and SDR.
- Keep configuration files, offline archives and recovery instructions on removable storage so the spare is useful even if the active board or its card fails.
A second board reduces replacement time, but it does not remove the single points of failure in the power system, storage, display, hub, cabling or radio.
What the HackRF One adds
HackRF One is the SDR named in the project report. A specialist RTL-SDR.com comparison describes HackRF as a transmit-and-receive device with a 30–6000 MHz range, 20 MHz receive bandwidth and an 8-bit ADC. Those figures are reference values, not a guarantee for every setup, antenna or software configuration. The original report does not say that this cyberdeck transmitted.
Receive-only work needs different hardware. RTL-SDR receivers are commonly used for broadcast radio, aircraft and maritime tracking, weather-satellite reception, amateur-radio monitoring and signal analysis. RTL-SDR.com describes common R820T/R860/R828D-family devices as receive-only, with a 24–1766 MHz range and up to 3.2 MS/s maximum sampling (2.56 MS/s stable in its comparison). Not every application is lawful in every country, and tuner variants differ.

| Question | HackRF One | Typical RTL-SDR receiver |
|---|---|---|
| Transmit capability | Transmit and receive | Receive only |
| Reference frequency range | 30–6000 MHz | 24–1766 MHz for the cited R820T/R860/R828D family |
| Reference ADC | 8-bit | 8-bit |
| Best fit | Defined, lawful projects requiring transmission as well as reception | Monitoring and decoding where reception is sufficient |
| Important variable | Antenna, filtering, software, power and legal authorization | Tuner variant, antenna, software and legal authorization |
Choose the radio from the job rather than the emergency label. A receive-only monitoring system can be smaller and simpler; a transmit-capable device demands a clearly defined lawful use case, suitable antennas and careful power planning.
Can it run Wikipedia without the internet?
Yes, provided the archive is downloaded in advance and the device has enough storage. Kiwix supplies software and content formats for offline reading. The reported build used English and Japanese Wikipedia copies with images and also carried StackOverflow material and instructional videos.
Storage decisions that change the result
- Language: English, Japanese and other language editions have different sizes.
- Images: Image-inclusive archives require substantially more storage than text-only editions.
- Archive date: A downloaded snapshot is not automatically current; record its creation or download date.
- Content mix: Medical, repair, Linux and first-aid packs compete for the same space as Wikipedia.
- Access method: Kiwix can serve content locally, including through a hotspot or local network, but that network still needs to be configured and powered.
A community Raspberry Pi 5 cyberdeck repository lists an English, no-picture Wikipedia ZIM at about 50 GB. That number is repository- and version-specific, so check the current archive variant, language, image coverage and required free space before copying it. Raspberry Pi’s PiDex example likewise stores a Wikipedia database on a flash drive inside the case and treats portable solar panels as an optional power source.

How credible is the 48-hour battery claim?
It is a maker-reported capability, not an independently verified endurance specification. Modding told Hackster: “If wall power is available, it can charge full in two hours and then run for 48 hours straight.” The account does not publish the battery model or capacity, average and peak load, display brightness, SDR duty cycle, ambient temperature, starting charge, cutoff voltage or a runtime log.
That means the figure should not be transferred to another Raspberry Pi, display, SDR, power bank or archive load. A reproduction needs an end-to-end measurement of usable battery energy and actual operating modes.
Power planning method
- List every powered item: Pi, screen, SDR, USB hub, storage, Wi-Fi adapter, GPS, Arduino, keyboard and any network equipment.
- Measure typical and peak input power in the modes you will actually use, including radio activity and screen brightness.
- Account for regulator, cable and conversion losses rather than treating the battery’s printed watt-hours as fully usable.
- Size for startup and peak USB demand, not only an idle reading.
- Repeat the test until the system reaches its safe cutoff, recording temperature and operating state.
Raspberry Pi’s official cyberdeck guidance gives a separate worst-case example: a fully loaded Raspberry Pi 5 USB configuration is sized at 25 W, while Touch Display 2 uses approximately 3 W at full brightness, for at least 28 W combined in that stated example. Those figures are not measurements of this Pi 4 build and do not prove 48-hour operation.

- Compatibility --- Compatible with Raspberry Pi Pico 1/Pico 1 W and Raspberry Pi Pico 2 series.
- Onboard 3.5inch Capacitive Touch Screen --- This kit includes a high-resolution 320x480 touch screen for displaying visual outputs and receiving user input.
- With Mini PSP Joystick --- The built-in mini joystick provides precise analog control for navigating menus and controlling movement in projects.
- RGB Light --- The kit features an RGB light that can emit various colors, allowing for dynamic visual effects and status indicators.
- Buzzer --- An integrated buzzer produces audible feedback, enabling sound effects or alerts in your projects.
Raspberry Pi documentation also warns that board estimates exclude additional USB devices and that sudden power loss can corrupt storage. Its guidance cites up to 1.6 A for downstream Pi 5 USB peripherals with a 5 V, 5 A supply, compared with a 600 mA limit with other compatible supplies. The practical lesson is to size the complete system and include a shutdown or recovery plan.
How could it recharge away from mains power?
The maker planned fallback solar rated at 100 W at home and 30 W each in the car and emergency kit, plus car DC power. These are the reported planned inputs, not proof of charging performance in particular weather or locations.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Power bank: Simpler than designing a bare LiPo system, but its usable energy and output limits must be measured.
- Vehicle DC: Convenient when a suitable regulated adapter and safe cabling are available.
- Solar: Nameplate wattage is not delivered energy; orientation, shade, controller efficiency and weather determine charging time.
- LiPo arrangements: Require correct charging, protection and over-discharge control. Raspberry Pi guidance recommends a fused battery connection near the battery.
Build and serviceability lessons
Modding deliberately avoided 3D-printed covers, plexiglass and other cosmetic structures: “It’s also built to be as modular as possible. No 3D printed parts, covers or plexiglass. It would have looked great but in an emergency, those would only get in the way.” That choice favors access and replacement, but a field build still needs strain relief, ventilation, protected connectors and a packing layout that does not crush the screen or cables.
Checks before relying on the case
- Verify the exact Pelican model’s dimensions, seal and buoyancy claims rather than assuming every case has the same rating.
- Leave room to reach the power switch, storage, USB ports and radio connections without dismantling the whole deck.
- Secure boards and batteries against shock while keeping the spare removable.
- Separate antennas and sensitive radio cabling from noisy converters and high-current USB wiring where practical.
- Carry a known-good spare image, cables, adapters, fuses and a printed recovery checklist.
What this design is—and is not
It is a modular offline computer with field radio capability, stored reference material and a manual compute replacement. It is not documented as a certified life-support system, an automatically redundant cluster, a guaranteed 48-hour power station or proof that every listed accessory works together under emergency conditions.
The strongest design idea is the combination of serviceability and local knowledge: familiar interfaces, replaceable boards and information that remains available when networks fail. The weakest assumption would be treating the headline runtime or “redundant” label as a specification without measuring the exact build.
