Elon Musk’s proposed “powerful force” is artificial intelligence and robotics: he argues that they could raise productivity and output enough to help the United States carry its debt. His “1,000%” wording is emphatic rhetoric, not a measured probability or an official forecast—and higher output alone does not show that federal finances will improve enough, or soon enough, to resolve the debt problem.
What did Musk say about America going bankrupt?
Moneywise reported that Musk made the remarks during a February 5, 2026 appearance on the Dwarkesh Podcast. Fortune described the conversation as an interview with Dwarkesh Patel alongside Stripe cofounder John Collison. The comments are available here through those secondary accounts; the podcast recording and an independent transcript were not accessible for verification.
As reported by Moneywise, Musk said: “We are 1,000% going to go bankrupt as a country and fail as a country, without AI and robots.” He also said, “Nothing else will solve the national debt.” Fortune reported a further remark that gives a sense of his proposed timing: “We just need enough time to build the AI and robots to not go bankrupt before then.”

What “1,000%” does—and does not—mean
The phrase expresses Musk’s conviction; it is not a probability calculation, a government estimate, or an established prediction that the United States will default. His statement presents AI and robots as necessary to avert a national failure, but it does not quantify the technology’s likely contribution or establish that the outcome he fears is inevitable.

How does Musk think AI and robots could help with the debt?
The mechanism in Musk’s argument is higher productivity. If AI systems and robots allow workers and businesses to produce substantially more goods and services, the economy could generate more output. Musk’s proposed solution depends on that productivity growth being large enough—and arriving soon enough—to help bear the debt burden.
Fortune also reported Musk’s expectation that output could grow faster than the money supply, producing deflation. That is a proposed chain of effects, not proof that AI deployment will reach the necessary scale or schedule. Nor does greater private-sector output automatically become federal revenue: the reporting does not show that productivity gains would translate into tax receipts sufficient to change the government’s debt trajectory.

Would rising productivity necessarily make the debt easier to manage?
No. More productive capacity could strengthen the economy, but the effect on debt depends on how growth, prices, government revenue, spending and interest costs evolve. The available reporting does not provide a forecast showing that AI and robotics would improve those factors enough to resolve U.S. debt dynamics.

Deflation can complicate the picture
If prices and incomes fall while the amount owed remains fixed in nominal terms, debt can become heavier in real terms. Fortune notes this risk alongside Musk’s deflation scenario. In other words, an increase in what the economy can produce would not, by itself, make every consequence of deflation favorable for borrowers or public finances.

More output is not the same as more public revenue
Even if automation raises output, the fiscal result depends on whether that activity generates government revenue, when it does so, and how that revenue compares with spending and interest costs. The cited coverage presents Musk’s idea as a possibility, not a demonstrated link from deploying robots to paying down the national debt.
Does a large national debt mean the United States will literally run out of money?
“Going bankrupt” is a vivid way to describe fiscal danger, but it should not be treated as a technical description of the federal government’s finances. Fortune points to the dollar’s reserve-currency role, the government’s ability to borrow in its own currency, and the Federal Reserve’s capacity to buy bonds as factors that reduce the risk of outright default.

Those factors are not a guarantee that debt is harmless or that fiscal stress cannot worsen. They distinguish the risk of default from broader questions about the cost of servicing debt and the choices required to manage it. Musk’s warning does not establish that a U.S. default is certain.

In a February 9, 2026 article, Moneywise cited U.S. national debt of $38.56 trillion and a fiscal-year-to-date deficit of about $602 billion. Those are figures as reported in that dated article, not verified current values; they were not checked here against an official Treasury or Congressional Budget Office dataset. What should readers take from Musk’s proposal?
- The proposal: Musk says AI and robots could avert national failure by driving productivity and output high enough to help carry the debt.
- The status of the claim: “1,000%” is emphatic language attributed to Musk, not an institutional forecast or measured likelihood.
- The unresolved question: The reporting does not establish whether productivity gains would be large or timely enough, or how much they would improve federal revenues and debt dynamics.
- The fiscal distinction: Default risk and wider fiscal strain are different issues; the dollar’s role and the government’s borrowing capacity may mitigate the former without eliminating the latter.
