Electron documents four cookie sameSite values: unspecified, lax, strict, and no_restriction. The last one means the web-cookie policy SameSite=None; unspecified means no SameSite attribute is recorded. For cross-site cookie use, configure no_restriction and secure: true, but remember that this does not bypass third-party-cookie restrictions.

What Electron’s SameSite values mean

Electron exposes a cookie’s SameSite state through its session cookie API. The API uses no_restriction where web-cookie documentation says SameSite=None. Its unspecified value is not another explicit policy: it indicates that no SameSite attribute was recorded. See Electron’s Cookie Object and Cookies API documentation.

Electron value Web-cookie interpretation Cross-site behavior Practical meaning
strict SameSite=Strict Not sent on cross-site requests; sent only in same-site contexts. Most restrictive explicit option here. It can keep a cookie out of a user’s request when they follow a link from another site.
lax SameSite=Lax Sent for same-site requests and qualifying top-level cross-site navigations using a safe method. Electron’s documented cookies.set() default. It does not generally cover cross-site fetches, embedded resources, iframe navigations, or unsafe methods such as POST.
no_restriction SameSite=None Allows same-site and cross-site use under SameSite rules. Requires the cookie to be Secure; other browser privacy controls may still block or limit third-party use.
unspecified No SameSite attribute recorded Browser default behavior applies. Not equivalent to explicitly setting lax in every browser context. Chromium-based browsers use Lax as the default for omitted attributes, but behavior can vary elsewhere.

MDN explains the request-context rules for SameSite cookie attributes. The key distinction is that Lax permits a limited kind of cross-site navigation, while Strict does not; None permits cross-site sending under SameSite rules but is not an exemption from other restrictions.

What does sameSite: 'no_restriction' mean in Electron?

It is Electron’s API spelling for SameSite=None. Use it when a cookie needs to be sent in a cross-site context, such as a request initiated from another site, and explicitly set secure: true. Electron documents the Secure default as false except when SameSite=None is used; setting it explicitly avoids relying on an implicit default. Secure restricts transmission to secure schemes, while HttpOnly separately prevents access through client-side cookie APIs. Neither setting guarantees that third-party cookie access will be allowed.

Why does Electron say unspecified instead of None?

Because unspecified describes an absent attribute, not a value equivalent to SameSite=None. None is an explicit policy that allows cross-site use under SameSite rules and requires Secure; an omitted attribute leaves the browser to apply its default behavior. In Chromium-based browsers that default is Lax, but do not interpret an Electron cookie reported as unspecified as an explicit cross-site allowance.

Why is a third-party cookie not sent in Electron?

SameSite is only one part of cookie handling. Even a correctly configured no_restriction cookie can be blocked or limited by third-party-cookie controls or other browser privacy settings. MDN’s overview of third-party cookies describes those separate restrictions.

How to debug SameSite behavior in Electron

  1. Inspect the cookie. Use cookies.get() and check sameSite, secure, domain, and other returned fields in the Cookie Object.
  2. Verify the session. Confirm that the cookie read or written belongs to the same session or partition as the relevant WebContents. Check whether the partition should persist or be in memory using Electron’s Session reference.
  3. Classify the request. Determine whether it is same-site, a top-level cross-site navigation, a cross-site subresource or fetch, an iframe navigation, or a request using an unsafe method. Lax’s cross-site allowance depends on request type and method; see MDN’s SameSite guidance.
  4. Check cross-site configuration. For cross-site use, verify that the cookie is set to sameSite: 'no_restriction' and secure: true.
  5. Test the actual runtime. Check against the Electron release and bundled Chromium version you target, along with the applicable privacy settings. API details and browser controls can evolve; use the documentation for your Electron major version.
