El Niño is strengthening, but the latest official outlooks do not verify which impacts occurred during the week of October 12–18, 2026. NOAA’s October 8 discussion gives more than an 83% chance of strong-to-very-strong conditions through January–March 2027. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) outlook points to warmer-than-normal conditions across many land areas and rainfall shifts that vary by region. Those are seasonal probabilities—not reports of this week’s weather or proof that El Niño caused a particular event.
Is El Niño happening now?
Yes. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC) said on October 8, 2026, that El Niño continued to strengthen. Its discussion gave a greater than 83% chance that strong-to-very-strong conditions would continue through January–March 2027. NOAA’s ENSO Diagnostic Discussion synthesizes forecasts from multiple models in North America and abroad.
The National Weather Service’s current ENSO status page reports an El Niño Advisory and a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during Northern Hemisphere fall and winter 2026–27. WMO’s August update, published September 3, said El Niño was firmly established and gave nearly 100% probability of its persistence through September–November 2026 and December 2026–February 2027, with further strengthening expected before a late-year peak.
These figures come from different organizations, forecast products, and time windows; they are not interchangeable and should not be combined into one probability. WMO classifies events as weak, moderate, strong, or very strong. “Super El Niño” is not an official WMO operational category.

What does the outlook say for regions around the world?
WMO’s September 2026 global seasonal outlook covers August–October 2026. It describes the likelihood of seasonal average temperatures and precipitation relative to each location’s climatology. A favored category does not guarantee the weather on a particular day or in every city. The regional signals below summarize that outlook, not a verified account of October 12–18 conditions.
| Region | Temperature outlook | Rainfall outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Africa | Above-normal temperatures favored, with a stronger signal over Southern Africa | Wetter-than-normal conditions favored in the Greater Horn of Africa |
| Europe | Above-normal temperatures favored, especially in southern Europe | Wetter-than-normal conditions favored in southern Europe; drier-than-normal conditions favored in northern Europe |
| Arabian Peninsula and Indian subcontinent | Above-normal temperatures favored | Drier-than-normal conditions favored over the Indian subcontinent |
| Central and eastern Asia | Above-normal temperatures favored over eastern Asia | Wetter-than-normal conditions favored in parts of Central Asia |
| Australia and New Zealand | Above-normal temperatures favored in New Zealand | Drier-than-normal conditions favored in southern and eastern Australia |
| Central America and the Caribbean | Above-normal temperatures favored | Drier-than-normal conditions favored in southern Central America and parts of the Caribbean |
| North and South America | Above-normal temperatures favored in much of South America | Wetter-than-normal conditions favored in western North America south of 45°N and southeastern South America; drier conditions favored in northwestern South America |
These are probabilities for the outlook period, not a day-by-day forecast. WMO’s September outlook release also noted that a positive Indian Ocean Dipole could interact with El Niño and amplify regional risks such as drought, floods, and wildfire, particularly around the Indian Ocean basin. That is a risk signal, not attribution of any specific event.

What El Niño changes—and why its effects differ
El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). It involves warmer-than-average surface water in the central and eastern tropical Pacific alongside a connected atmospheric response, including weakened trade winds and an eastward shift in tropical rainfall. Those ocean–atmosphere changes can alter circulation patterns that influence temperature, rainfall, storms, agriculture, wildfire risk, and marine fisheries. NOAA explains the mechanism and its variability in Understanding El Niño & ENSO.
Typical patterns are useful background, not guarantees for this event. NOAA notes that many El Niño events bring wetter conditions to parts of the southern United States, Peru, Chile, and Ecuador, while drought risk can rise in Australia, Indonesia, and parts of southern Asia. Changes in ocean conditions can also shift fish and other marine species around northern South America. For this season’s regional expectations, the dated WMO outlook is the more specific guide.

As WMO cautioned in its August 2026 update, “the strength of an El Niño event does not translate directly into the magnitude of impacts in any region.” Local outcomes depend on regional climate patterns and other drivers as well as ENSO.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can be said about impacts this week?
The available NOAA and WMO material supports a forecast update, not a verified global roundup of impacts observed from October 12–18. The seasonal outlook describes conditions more likely over a broader period; it does not establish that a specific heatwave, storm, flood, drought, fire, or marine change happened this week or was caused by El Niño. Establishing a cause for an individual event requires separate event-specific reporting and attribution.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said on September 3, 2026: “El Niño is one of the most closely monitored climate phenomena in the world. But forecasts in themselves do not prevent hazards, people do.” For readers, the practical distinction is to use seasonal outlooks as context for risk and local forecasts or official hazard alerts for decisions about a particular place and day.
