El Capitan’s 17.41 petaflop/s result is its score on the HPCG benchmark—not its High-Performance Linpack (HPL) score. In the June 2026 rankings, the AMD-powered system placed second on both HPCG and TOP500’s HPL list. Its HPL result was 1.742 exaflop/s; LineShine led that list at 2.198 exaflop/s.
What does El Capitan’s 17.41-petaflop/s score measure?
The figure is El Capitan’s result on HPCG, a benchmark distinct from HPL. TOP500 first reported the 17.41 petaflop/s HPCG score in June 2025, when El Capitan ranked first on the HPCG list. In the June 2026 HPCG update, it ranked second. TOP500’s June 2025 announcement and its June 2026 HPCG list document the result and the change in rank.
Petaflop/s measures floating-point operations per second, but a benchmark score is meaningful in the context of the workload used to produce it. HPCG and HPL test systems differently, so their scores are not interchangeable measures of one universal “speed.”

| Benchmark or list | June 2026 position | El Capitan result |
|---|---|---|
| TOP500 HPL | Second | 1.742 exaflop/s Rmax |
| HPCG | Second | 17.41 petaflop/s |
| HPL-MxP | Position not stated in the cited highlights | 16.7 exaflop/s |
The HPL figure is the system’s Rmax, or measured maximum performance for that benchmark. HPL-MxP is a separate mixed-precision benchmark, and its 16.7-exaflop/s result should not be confused with either HPL Rmax or the HPCG score. TOP500’s June 2026 list and June 2026 highlights report these system details.

Why El Capitan no longer ranks first
LineShine debuted at No. 1 on the June 2026 TOP500 HPL list with an HPL result of 2.198 exaflop/s, placing El Capitan second on that list. This is an HPL comparison: it does not change the fact that El Capitan also ranks second on the separate June 2026 HPCG list. Rankings should therefore be stated with both the benchmark and edition, rather than as an undated claim that a system is globally No. 1. TOP500’s June 2026 report on LineShine describes the HPL change.

TOP500 lists El Capitan as an HPE Cray EX255a system with AMD 4th-generation EPYC 24-core 1.8 GHz processors, AMD Instinct MI300A accelerators, and Slingshot-11 networking. The June 2026 entry lists 11,039,616 cores. These are listed platform specifications, not a claim that every component contributes equally to every benchmark score. How to read supercomputer rankings
- Check the benchmark: HPL, HPCG, and HPL-MxP are separate tests; do not compare their headline numbers as if they were the same measurement.
- Check the edition date: TOP500 rankings can change between editions. El Capitan led HPL and HPCG in June 2025, but ranked second on both lists in June 2026.
- Use the exact score label: El Capitan’s 1.742-exaflop/s HPL Rmax, 17.41-petaflop/s HPCG result, and 16.7-exaflop/s HPL-MxP result refer to different measures.
