For God of War (2018), Game8 rates Eir as “Challenging” at level 5 and “Easy” at level 6. Treat those labels as guide benchmarks, not a required level or a guarantee: your difficulty setting, gear, and ability to interrupt her attacks all affect how hard the fight feels.
Level 5 or level 6: which should you choose?
| Kratos level | Game8 rating | What it means for your decision |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Challenging | A reasonable point to attempt Eir if you are comfortable learning her attack patterns and have suitable gear. |
| 6 | Easy | A more forgiving guide benchmark if you would rather improve your readiness before taking her on. |
These are Game8’s guide classifications, not official requirements from Santa Monica Studio. The developer has said the Valkyrie fights were designed to be beatable by a level 1 Kratos without taking damage. Combat designer Denny Yeh’s statement describes the design intent—not a practical recommendation to fight Eir at level 1 or a promise that a low-level attempt will be easy. What matters beyond your level
Your level is a rough indicator of readiness, not the deciding factor by itself. Eir tests whether you can recognize and interrupt dangerous moves, and a higher level will not replace those responses. Your selected difficulty and equipment also influence how punishing mistakes feel. If level 5 feels too difficult, upgrading your gear or returning later are both reasonable; no particular build is required by the level recommendation.
How to handle Eir’s key attacks
Interrupt the airborne mace quake
When Eir rises into the air to prepare her mace quake, throw a projectile to interrupt her before the attack completes. Santa Monica Studio’s combat designer describes proactively interrupting attacks as part of what the Valkyrie encounters test. Watch for the animation and act before the move lands rather than waiting to dodge its impact.
#1 Best Overall
- Feel your journey through the Norse realms, made possible by immersive haptic feedback and adaptive trigger functionality.
- Take advantage of multidirectional 3D Audio; hear enemies approaching from any direction. (3D audio with stereo headphones (analog or USB))
- Bask in the beautiful worlds you travel through, brought to life by precise art direction and arresting attention to detail.
- Switch between full 4K resolution at a targeted 30 frames per second, or dynamic resolution upscaled to 4K at a targeted 60fps. (4K resolution requires a compatible 4K TV or display)
Break her cocoon defense
If Eir draws into her defensive cocoon, break her guard instead of continuing to attack into it. Recognizing when she is defending—and changing your response—is more useful than repeating attacks that are not getting through.
Use her wing opening if it suits your loadout
Game8 suggests starting with a light and heavy Runic attack when Eir opens her wings. That is one walkthrough’s tactic, not the only viable opening. Adapt it to the Runic attacks you have equipped and their cooldowns.
Rank #2
- Physical combat over the shoulder free camera brings the action closer than ever combat in God of war is up close frenetic and unflinching. Kratos' Axes powerful, magic and multi faceted is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration
- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before
Where to find Eir
Game8 places Eir’s Hidden Chamber deep inside the Mountain. If you reach her and the level-5 challenge feels too demanding, you can leave, improve your equipment, and come back later; the level guidance does not make a specific detour or build mandatory.
