An eInk badge is a reusable badge with an electronic-paper display for showing information such as a person’s name, role, company, QR code, or event credential. This guide covers the category for individuals, makers, and organizations considering badges for events or workplaces—not just one provider’s “Ink Badge Hire” service.

What is an eInk badge?

An eInk badge combines an electronic-paper screen with the electronics and hardware needed to display and update a credential. Depending on the model, it may serve as a digital business card, event pass, employee or visitor ID, or a programmable badge for a conference or hackathon. These are uses described by manufacturers and providers, not independent evaluations of performance.

The key distinction is between the display and the complete badge. E Ink says its display needs power to change an image, not to maintain a static one. The badge may still need a battery or another power source for its controller and wireless communications. E Ink’s explanation of eBadge display behavior describes the display itself, not the power requirements of every finished product.

How do eInk badges update?

Update method varies by product. A phone app may send new content over NFC, a badge may use NFC and Bluetooth, or programmable hardware may be configured through a wired interface. Event services can instead manage badge design and deployment. These approaches are not interchangeable: confirm the exact model’s supported phones, apps, setup process, and update workflow before choosing it.

Example Display and update approach What the source describes
Sertag 3.7-inch smart name card Four-color display; phone-app updates using NFC The product page lists name-card and related uses. Sertag product details
TIBURN badge App-managed updates using NFC and Bluetooth The manual describes badge functions and operations; it notes iOS support depends on firmware and app releases. TIBURN manual
InfoBadge2040 Programmable hardware; the cited maker describes UART programming The maker describes a battery-less badge with QR generation and custom event badge production. InfoBadge2040 and custom badge information
ONDRAFT event badges Managed design workflow The provider describes a four-color 250×122 e-paper face and hire or purchase for events and visitor days. ONDRAFT badge service

These are examples, not a controlled comparison. A “battery-less” product description should also be checked against the complete hardware and update setup: it does not establish that every e-paper badge works without power or that other models share its design.

How long does an eInk badge battery last?

There is no single battery-life figure for the category. It depends on the particular badge’s hardware, battery, wireless use, and how often it is updated. E Ink and Atmosic’s January 27, 2021 reference-design announcement says a CR2032 could last over three years in a typical scenario involving three image changes per day. That conditional estimate applies to the stated reference-design scenario; it is not a general promise for retail badges.

  • Durable Design for Everyday Use – IP65‑rated for resistance to dust and water. For best update performance, avoid metal surfaces, magnets, or thick phone cases during NFC communication.

For a specific product, look for its battery type, charging or replacement instructions, and any stated usage assumptions. Ask whether the quoted life includes Bluetooth or other wireless activity, and whether the badge must be charged between events.

What should you check before choosing one?

Compare the deployment requirements, not just the screen. A four-color display may be useful for visual emphasis, but update reliability, compatibility, wearability, and credential workflow can matter more in daily use.

  • Display: Check size, color capability, and whether the layout can show the information you need.
  • Update route: Establish whether changes use NFC, Bluetooth, wired programming, or a provider-managed workflow.
  • Compatibility: Verify supported phone operating systems, required apps, firmware, and any event or workplace systems. Do not assume a badge integrates with a particular check-in platform.
  • Power: Distinguish a display that retains a static image without continuous display power from a complete badge that may still need power for its electronics.
  • Credential features: Confirm whether QR codes or other content can be generated and updated as needed. A displayed QR code alone does not establish secure access control.
  • Physical requirements: Ask the vendor about attachment, durability, and water resistance; the cited product examples do not establish those properties across the category.
  • Deployment model: For a fleet, clarify setup, roster or check-in handling, support, reuse, shipping, and post-event collection or storage.

Can you hire eInk badges for a conference?

Yes. ONDRAFT currently describes both event-day hire and a purchase option for conferences, exhibitions, networking, and visitor days. Its page describes a provider-run design workflow and four-color badges, but the reviewed page did not expose live price examples. Check the provider’s current terms and availability directly at e-inkbadge.com.

Hiring may suit a one-off event when the organizer wants a managed supply; purchasing may be worth evaluating when badges will be reused across deployments. Compare total operational needs rather than unit price alone: quantity, configuration, attendee or visitor check-in process, support, shipping, reuse, and what happens to badges after the event. The provider’s page does not establish compatibility with any particular event platform.

Where are eInk badges useful?

Documented product and provider examples include digital business cards, conference networking, exhibitions, employee and visitor identification, event passes, and hackathons. The best fit depends on whether information changes often enough to justify a programmable display and whether the badge’s update method fits the people managing it.

For a personal badge or maker project, prioritize how content is updated and whether the hardware and software suit your phone or programming setup. For an organization, assess the full badge workflow—from preparing names and credentials to distributing, updating, recovering, and reusing the devices. The named providers describe these applications, but the available sources do not provide an independent head-to-head performance or durability test.
