Choose based first on the persistence model and database your .NET application needs: EF Core is a provider-based object-relational mapper for conventional relational data access, while Marten adds document storage and event sourcing on PostgreSQL, and Polecat brings a similar model to SQL Server 2025. These are different architectural choices, not interchangeable products with an established performance winner.
How the three tools differ
| Option | Primary persistence model | Database commitment | Event sourcing |
|---|---|---|---|
| EF Core | Object-relational mapping through entity classes, a model, a context, and a database provider | Provider-dependent; documented providers include SQL Server, SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, Oracle, Cosmos DB, MongoDB, and others | Not a defining capability of the cited EF Core overview |
| Marten | Document-oriented persistence and event sourcing | PostgreSQL | A central documented capability |
| Polecat | Document-oriented persistence and event sourcing | SQL Server 2025 | A central documented capability |
EF Core lets developers work with .NET objects and query or save data through a provider. The breadth of its database support comes from those provider packages; support quality, licensing, maintenance, and version compatibility vary. See Microsoft’s EF Core overview and provider catalog and guidance.
Marten uses PostgreSQL for document storage and event streams while retaining PostgreSQL’s relational capabilities. The project describes itself as a .NET library for document-oriented persistence and event sourcing. Its getting-started instructions use the Marten NuGet package: dotnet add package Marten. Read the Marten introduction and getting-started guide.

Polecat is a Marten-inspired .NET document database and event-sourcing library backed by SQL Server 2025. Its documentation says it uses SQL Server 2025’s native JSON type for documents and event data, and that its API patterns mirror Marten. See the Polecat documentation.

Which database and persistence model fit?
Choose EF Core for relational object mapping
Evaluate EF Core when the application needs conventional object-relational mapping, or when supporting more than one database engine is important. A provider makes that choice possible, but it does not guarantee that every database behaves identically or that provider changes are effortless. Check the specific provider’s maintenance, license, feature coverage, and compatibility with the EF Core major version you plan to use.
Evaluate Marten for PostgreSQL document and event-stream persistence
If PostgreSQL is the database your team wants to operate and document storage or event sourcing is a real domain requirement, Marten is the option in this comparison built around that combination. Its documentation presents PostgreSQL as both a document database and an event store, alongside its relational capabilities.
Evaluate Polecat for SQL Server 2025 document and event-stream persistence
If your environment is committed to SQL Server 2025 and you want a document/event-sourcing model, Polecat is the corresponding option to investigate. Confirm its current maturity, supported SQL Server features, and project compatibility before adopting it; the available documentation establishes its positioning, not a complete release or compatibility matrix.

- EF Core: Install the provider package appropriate to the chosen database, then check the provider’s compatibility with the EF Core version. Microsoft notes that providers typically do not work across EF Core major versions. Its installation guidance, last updated March 23, 2023, describes the general NuGet and tooling workflow rather than proving a current release recommendation. For EF command-line and Package Manager Console tools, match the tools’ major version to the runtime’s major version.
- Marten: The getting-started command is
dotnet add package Marten. Confirm the current Marten release, .NET target framework, PostgreSQL version, and required database features in project documentation before deployment. - Polecat: Consult its current installation and release guidance to verify the package, .NET target framework, SQL Server 2025 support, and required features. The documentation cited here does not establish a complete compatibility matrix.
Compare real workloads, not assumed performance
The documented differences establish database targets and persistence models; they do not establish that one option is categorically faster, more reliable, simpler, or cheaper. There is no apples-to-apples benchmark here for a particular application. Before deciding on performance or total cost, test representative reads and writes, schema or model changes, and operational workflows using the team’s actual data shape and deployment conditions.
The same caution applies to architecture: document storage and event sourcing are capabilities, not automatic benefits for every application. Choose them because they meet the system’s domain and operational needs, not merely because a library offers them.
