The mineral is edscottite, identified in the Wedderburn meteorite from central Victoria, Australia. The phrase “never before seen in nature” does not mean the material had never been produced: it had been encountered in iron-smelting contexts. The discovery was its documented natural occurrence in a meteorite.

What was found, and where?

Edscottite is an iron-carbon mineral identified in the Wedderburn meteorite, an iron-rich specimen found just outside the town of Wedderburn in 1951. Museums Victoria holds the meteorite. A 2019 account from the Council of Australasian Museum Directors, credited to Liam Mannix’s reporting in The Age, says the original 220-gram rock had been divided for study and that 71 grams remained in the museum vaults at the time. Those are historical figures, not a current inventory.

A Caltech team examined a slice of the meteorite in 2018 and found a thin sliver of edscottite among other mineral layers. The material consists of iron and carbon atoms arranged in a particular way; it was named for pioneering cosmochemist Edward Scott. Council of Australasian Museum Directors: “MV’s Wedderburn meteorite reveals” (1 September 2019).

Why was this a discovery if smelters had produced it?

The distinction is between an industrially produced phase and a verified occurrence in nature. The 2019 account says edscottite had been encountered inside smelters as a phase of iron during steelmaking. Its identification in the Wedderburn meteorite established a natural occurrence; it was not the first time the material had appeared under any circumstances.

Museums Victoria senior curator of geosciences Stuart Mills explained the proposed formation process: “This meteorite had an abundance of carbon in it. And as it slowly cooled down, the iron and carbon came together and formed this mineral.” The account also quotes Mills saying, “But they have never seen it naturally occurring. And minerals only get a name when you can find them in nature.” That is his explanation in the report, not a complete account of mineral-naming standards.

How might edscottite have formed?

The reported interpretation is that iron and carbon cooled together in the core of a differentiated parent body, and that material from this body later became part of the meteorite after the body broke apart. This is a reconstruction of the meteorite’s history, not an event scientists observed directly. The account quotes planetary scientist Geoffrey Bonning of the Australian National University describing the proposed fate of the parent body: “It got blasted apart.”

Is edscottite the same as ringwoodite?

No. Ringwoodite belongs to a separate Australian meteorite story. The University of New England reports that the Tenham meteorite fell near Windorah, Queensland, in 1879, and that geologist Ray Binns named ringwoodite in a 1969 paper after examining it. Ringwoodite is associated with high-pressure conditions deep within Earth and with shock veins in the meteorite; edscottite was identified in the Wedderburn meteorite. University of New England: “Meteorite that revealed Earth’s depths” (9 October 2019).
