AP reported on October 2, 2026, that soldiers burned a displacement camp in Kigonze, outside Bunia, which housed a transit center for patients with Ebola. The agency attributed the account to a senior UN official. In a separate update, AP said the DRC Health Ministry had reported 4,018 deaths among 8,300 cases in the outbreak. Those are figures from the ministry’s latest Thursday release cited by AP—not a live count.
What was burned in Kigonze?
The distinction matters: although AP’s headline called it an Ebola treatment center, its report described a displacement camp housing a transit center for infected patients. Kigonze is on the outskirts of Bunia, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ituri province.
AP attributed the fire account to a senior UN official, who said soldiers burned the camp while searching for weapons. The report said 19,000 people living there were forced to flee. It did not identify individual soldiers or establish a motive beyond the reported weapons search. The account is attributed reporting, not an independently verified finding about who set the fire.
What do the reported outbreak figures say?
The DRC Health Ministry’s figures, as reported by AP on October 2, were 4,018 deaths among 8,300 cases since the outbreak was declared on May 15, 2026. They describe the tally in the ministry’s latest Thursday update cited in that report; later figures may differ.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in a situation update dated October 1, 2026, identifies the current DRC outbreak as Bundibugyo virus disease. The label matters because Ebola outbreaks can involve different viruses; information about a different Ebola virus species should not automatically be applied to this outbreak. CDC said the risk to the American public and travelers remained low in that update.
What losing the transit center means
AP quoted Julien Harneis, the UN’s senior Ebola coordinator, saying: “When we lose a center, that means we lose capacity, we lose investment, and we have to start again.” That describes the general cost of losing a response facility. AP did not quantify the patient-care capacity of the Kigonze site or how much capacity the fire removed.

AP also quoted Stephanie Hoffman, an MSF coordinator in Butembo, describing the outbreak’s spread: “It is like fighting a wildfire,” she said. “Multiple outbreaks are developing at the same time, with varying intensity and in different locations.”

Attacks on Ebola response facilities have occurred before in the DRC, but the earlier events were part of a separate outbreak. The World Health Organization’s March 14, 2019 report covered the 2018–2019 outbreak and should not be treated as verification of the 2026 Kigonze fire.

In a March 9, 2019 statement about an attack on a Butembo treatment center, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “These are not attacks BY the community, they are attacks ON the community.” He was addressing the 2019 incident, not the 2026 fire. He also described the challenge of balancing accessible care and a neutral response with protection for patients and staff from armed groups.

In an August 12, 2026 response update, the CDC described support for surveillance, diagnostic laboratories, infection prevention and control, and outbreak containment. Those activities provide response context; the CDC pages cited here do not independently verify the Kigonze fire or the specific 4,018-death tally.
