Short answer: Eaton’s published HDX PDU G4 material specifies up to 46 kW per PDU—not 81 kW for one unit. The sources identify the family as HDX, not HDXL. Treat both “81 kW” and “HDXL” as unverified unless an exact Eaton catalog number and authoritative documentation support them.
Is one Eaton HDX rack PDU really rated for 81 kW?
Not according to the Eaton material cited here. Eaton’s September 2025 announcement says the HDX PDU G4 family can “Provide up to 100A / 46 kW in a 0U form factor to power GPU-intensive workloads, reduce rack infrastructure footprint.” Eaton’s brochure separately states up to 46 kW per PDU. Neither source supports an 81 kW rating for a single documented unit.
The sources call the product family HDX PDU G4; they do not establish “HDXL” as the model name. A larger figure could refer to a different product designation or a combined system, but that possibility is not confirmed by the cited documentation. Do not treat an aggregate rack or multi-PDU capacity as the rating of one PDU.

What does 0U mean on a rack PDU?
A 0U PDU mounts vertically, typically along the side or rear of a rack, instead of occupying horizontal rack units used by servers and other equipment. Eaton describes the HDX’s 0U format as a way to provide outlet density without using rack space. Its brochure also describes tool-less mounting buttons and alternating-phase outlets; these are manufacturer-described features, not independent test findings.
“0U” describes the mounting format, not universal compatibility. Check the PDU’s physical dimensions and mounting arrangement against the rack, and confirm that installation meets the facility’s electrical and safety requirements.

Why the exact HDX model matters
HDX configurations differ. Eaton’s model listings show variation in voltage, current, input connection, outlet types and counts, and rated capacity. For example, one Eaton listing describes a managed 0U model with a hardwired input, 240/415 V supply, 54 outlets, and a 46 kW rating. Those details belong to that listed configuration; they should not be assumed for every HDX model.
Before selecting or specifying a unit, compare the exact catalog number with the facility supply and the equipment to be connected:

- Supply: Verify voltage, phase, and available current against both the PDU rating and facility infrastructure.
- Input: Confirm whether the model is plug-in or hardwired, and whether its connector or wiring arrangement is supported on site.
- Capacity: Check the rated kW and current for that exact SKU. A family maximum does not establish the capacity of every configuration.
- Outputs: Match outlet type and count to the equipment, and plan how loads will be distributed across outlets and phases.
- Physical fit: Check dimensions and vertical mounting compatibility with the rack.
- Features: Select only the monitoring, outlet control, and environmental sensing functions the installation requires.
Eaton’s HDX model listings provide configuration-specific details. The catalog number—not the family name alone—is the useful reference when confirming a design.
Which monitoring and control features are available?
Eaton’s installation guide distinguishes several model types: basic, in-line metered, metered input, metered outlet, switched, and managed. These labels indicate different monitoring and control capabilities, so check the guide and the exact model documentation rather than assuming every HDX has the same functions.

Environmental sensor monitoring requires an Environmental Monitoring Probe, according to Eaton’s Rack PDU G4 Installation and Setup Manual. Confirm probe compatibility with the selected PDU before treating environmental sensing as part of the system.

Yes, as a manufacturer-stated use case. Eaton markets HDX PDU G4 for GPU-intensive workloads, including high-performance computing and generative AI, and describes the 0U format as a way to reduce rack infrastructure footprint. That positioning and the published specifications do not amount to independent performance testing in an AI rack, nor do they establish that a particular rack design is suitable.

For an actual deployment, the PDU must match the facility’s electrical supply and the planned equipment load. The exact SKU, distribution design, and installation requirements determine whether a unit is appropriate; the AI label alone cannot answer those questions.
How to verify a proposed 81 kW specification
- Ask for the complete Eaton catalog number and the official specification sheet or product page for that exact model.
- Check whether the stated figure is for one PDU or for a rack, multiple PDUs, or another system configuration.
- Compare the model’s voltage, current, input connection, and rated capacity with the facility supply and installation plan.
- Verify outlet layout, mounting fit, and required monitoring or switching features against the connected equipment.
If the documentation only identifies an HDX PDU G4 with a rating up to 46 kW per PDU, do not describe it as a single 81 kW PDU. Eaton directs prospective buyers to contact the company or locate a channel partner through its Rack PDU G4 product page.
