Eastlink announced its TiVo-powered TV experience on September 2, 2020, pitching it as a simpler way to find and record programming across live TV, on-demand, recordings and selected streaming services. Eastlink’s current TiVo Stream offering has since expanded to include a mobile app and cloud DVR, but it remains tied to Eastlink TV service and compatible set-top equipment.
What Eastlink announced in 2020
In a September 2, 2020 release from Halifax, Eastlink said customers could access its new TiVo-powered TV experience. The announcement focused on helping viewers find something to watch among a large range of choices. CEO Deborah Shaffner described searching by a show’s name, an actor, or even a line from a movie.
Eastlink said voice search could find content on live TV, in on-demand titles, in recordings, and on Netflix and Amazon Prime. The company also described personalized recommendations based on viewing preferences and proactive recording. These were Eastlink’s launch claims, not independently tested performance findings. The release positioned TiVo as part of broader personalization efforts and referred to Eastlink’s earlier TV Channel Exchange service. Eastlink’s September 2, 2020 announcement.
Remote Finder and voice-control limits
The launch announcement also highlighted a Remote Finder button for locating a misplaced remote. Eastlink support says voice control and Remote Finder require the remote to be in RF mode and paired with a specific receiver. Voice control does not work inside apps such as YouTube and Netflix, so the launch description should not be read as a promise that voice search behaves the same way within every app. Eastlink’s voice-control support information.
