Ian Beale’s return to Walford after prison does not bring an easy reunion with his family. In episodes scheduled for 7 and 8 October 2026, he withdraws from loved ones, clashes with Harvey Monroe and finds unexpected support from Ned Hawkins, who helps him face the night of the accident.
Why Ian struggles after coming home
A report attributed to Metro, published on 2 October 2026, says Ian is affected by his time behind bars and shuts out loved ones as they prepare to welcome him home. His return does not immediately restore his relationships or make him feel at ease in Walford. Read the Metro-attributed report.

How Ian and Harvey fall out
Harvey is trying to help Kathy prepare for Ian’s return while juggling another commitment: looking after Lily Slater’s daughter, Charli, so Lily can attend a career open day. Harvey cleans the chippy ahead of an inspection, but misses it. When Ian learns what happened, they argue at The Vic; Ian becomes overwhelmed by the welcome drinks and leaves.
How Ned becomes Ian’s ally
After the chippy is vandalised with graffiti, Ned Hawkins joins Ian in cleaning it. The practical help gives Ned an opening to encourage Ian to talk about what happened on the night of the accident. Ned is described by Radio Times as a war veteran and trained therapist, a background that helps explain why he may be able to support Ian through a difficult conversation.
