SpaMedica has opened a private cataract surgery service in East Kilbride, its first location in Scotland. The service is a private, self-pay route—not part of NHS Lanarkshire and not established as NHS-funded care. NHS cataract surgery is separately available at University Hospital Hairmyres.
What has opened in East Kilbride?
SpaMedica’s specialist cataract surgery service in East Kilbride was reported as open by the Association of Optometrists on 28 August 2026. The opening marks the company’s first entry into Scotland. The available reports do not establish the centre’s precise address, appointment availability, procedure volume or patient outcomes.
SpaMedica chief medical officer Dr Alex Silvester said: “For many people, timely treatment can make a significant difference to their independence, confidence and quality of life.” This is the provider’s view about timely treatment, not a measured result from the new centre. Association of Optometrists, 28 August 2026.
Is the new service NHS or private?
The launch coverage describes SpaMedica’s East Kilbride service as private, and a September 2026 report describes a self-pay pathway. It is separate from NHS Lanarkshire. Current prices, referral requirements and eligibility criteria were not established in the published reports, so confirm these directly with SpaMedica before making plans. Primary Health Net, 2 September 2026.

How does it compare with NHS cataract care nearby?
NHS Lanarkshire’s University Hospital Hairmyres is an existing NHS cataract surgery site. Scottish Parliament material lists it among sites where cataract procedures were carried out in 2024, based on Public Health Scotland data extracted in July 2025. That is separate provision from SpaMedica’s private service. Scottish Parliament, questions and answers on cataract surgery facilities.

What do reported cataract waiting figures mean?
The Association of Optometrists’ August 2026 article reported SpaMedica’s estimate that around 19,000 people in Scotland were waiting for cataract surgery. A more exact figure—18,956 people waiting for NHS cataract surgery—was reported by Primary Health Net in September 2026, attributed to July 2025 freedom-of-information responses from health boards obtained by the Scottish Liberal Democrats. These figures have different sources and descriptions; neither is a live October 2026 count, nor a measure of how long a patient will wait at either East Kilbride service.
