The easiest way to screenshot on most Samsung Galaxy phones is to press and release the Power (or Side) button and Volume Down button at the same time. A brief flash, sound, toolbar, or thumbnail confirms the capture. Press briefly rather than holding the buttons; holding them too long can open the power menu on some models.
This guide covers button-free methods, full-page scrolling screenshots, S Pen captures, where files are saved, and fixes for blocked or failed screenshots. Menu names and available features can vary with your Galaxy model, One UI version, carrier, and region.
1. Use the Power/Side + Volume Down buttons
- Open the screen you want to save.
- Press the Power/Side button and Volume Down button together.
- Release both immediately.
- Use the thumbnail or screenshot toolbar that appears if you want to edit, share, or scroll-capture the image.
The buttons do not need to be held. If the power menu appears, try again with a quicker press. On older models, the power button may be labeled Power; on newer Galaxy phones it is usually called the Side button.
Where the screenshot is saved
Open Gallery > Albums > Screenshots. You can also find it through the Gallery search or the My Files app, depending on your software version. Screenshots normally use the phone’s standard image format and can be edited or shared like any other Gallery image.

2. Screenshot without pressing buttons
Palm swipe
- Open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures. The wording or location can differ by One UI version.
- Turn on Palm swipe to capture.
- Place the edge of your hand on one side of the display and swipe across it in one continuous motion.
This is useful when one hand is holding the phone or the physical buttons are difficult to reach. If it does not work, check that the setting is enabled and swipe with the side of your palm rather than a fingertip. Samsung notes that the feature is not available on every device.
Voice commands
With the relevant assistant set up, say “Hey Bixby, take a screenshot” or “Hey Google, take a screenshot.” Voice capture is practical when your hands are occupied, but the assistant must be enabled, recognize the wake phrase, and have permission to interact with the current screen.
Tasks Edge panel
- Open the Edge panel by swiping inward from the panel handle.
- Open the panel settings, choose Tasks, and add the Take screenshot task if your phone offers it.
- Tap the task whenever you need a capture.
This avoids the button combination after setup. Samsung’s US documentation describes adding Take screenshot to the Tasks Edge panel, but the option can vary by model, software, and region.

3. Capture an entire webpage or long screen
- Take a normal screenshot with the buttons, palm swipe, voice command, or another supported method.
- When the screenshot toolbar appears, tap the Scroll capture icon (downward arrows).
- Continue tapping the icon until the required content is included, or stop when the page ends.
- Tap the preview or save control to store the extended image.
Scroll capture is intended for content longer than one screen, such as a webpage, article, chat, or settings list. It depends on the app exposing a scrollable page; a fixed image, protected screen, or app that does not support the feature may stop the capture at one screen.
4. Use an S Pen for regions and annotations
Screen write
- Remove the S Pen on a compatible Galaxy device.
- From Air command, choose Screen write.
- Draw or write on the captured screen.
- Save the result to Gallery.
Smart Select
Choose Smart Select from Air command when you need only a rectangle, oval, animation, or another defined area instead of the entire display. This is often cleaner than cropping a full screenshot afterward. S Pen tools are limited to compatible Galaxy models and may have different labels after software updates.

6. Edit, share, and protect your screenshots
Use the toolbar thumbnail immediately after capture to crop, draw, add text, share, or delete. If the toolbar disappears, open Gallery > Albums > Screenshots, select the image, and tap the edit or share controls. For sensitive material, remember that a screenshot is an ordinary file: it can be copied, synced, or sent like other photos. Review recipients and cloud-backup settings before sharing banking, health, authentication, or personal information.

7. When Samsung refuses to take a screenshot
“Can’t take screenshot due to security measure”
Some apps and screens deliberately block screenshots for privacy or security. Banking apps are a common example. This restriction is controlled by the app or operating system, not by a faulty button combination. Use the app’s own export, download, receipt, or sharing feature instead. Do not try to bypass a security control.
Nothing happens
- Press both buttons at exactly the same time and release quickly.
- Try the palm-swipe method after confirming it is enabled.
- Remove a thick case that prevents either button from being pressed fully.
- Restart the phone if the screenshot service appears frozen.
- Install available system updates, then check whether the menu names or gesture setting moved.
The screenshot is missing
- Check Gallery > Albums > Screenshots, not only the Recent view.
- Look in My Files if Gallery is filtering or hiding albums.
- Wait briefly after a large scroll capture; a long image can take longer to save.
- Check free storage if captures fail repeatedly.
Scroll capture is unavailable
Make sure the first capture was taken inside a genuinely scrollable page and that the screenshot toolbar is visible. Some apps disable scrolling screenshots or expose only a single fixed screen. Try the same steps in a regular webpage or settings list to distinguish an app restriction from a phone problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot a Samsung lock screen?
Availability depends on the phone’s security settings and the screen being captured. If Samsung or an app blocks it, use an official share or export option rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.
Why do my screenshots show navigation or status bars?
A standard screenshot captures the visible display. Crop the image in the screenshot toolbar or Gallery editor if you need to remove those areas.
