Asteroid 2024 PT5 passed through a temporary Earth-Moon-system capture interval from September 29 to November 25, 2024, according to one research paper. NASA describes the same object differently: it never entered orbit around Earth and continued orbiting the Sun. The encounter is over, and NASA says the asteroid poses no hazard to Earth.
What happened to 2024 PT5?
2024 PT5 is a small near-Earth asteroid first observed on August 7, 2024, by the NASA-funded ATLAS telescope in Sutherland, South Africa. NASA estimated it to be about 33 feet (10 meters) wide. During the event that inspired the “mini moon” headlines, it remained in a distant, Sun-centered orbit rather than becoming a conventional satellite circling Earth.
The date range depends on how “capture” is being used. In a 2024 preprint, Bolin and colleagues describe the asteroid as captured by the Earth-Moon system from September 29 through November 25, 2024. NASA’s October 2, 2024, account says it “will never be captured by Earth’s gravity.” These descriptions are not equivalent: temporary dynamical capture by the Earth-Moon system does not mean insertion into an ordinary Earth orbit.
Why do scientists and NASA describe the capture differently?
“Captured” can refer to a temporary change in an object’s motion relative to Earth and the Moon, or more narrowly to becoming bound in an orbit around Earth. The papers and NASA account emphasize different definitions and reference frames, so the popular label “mini moon” needs that qualification.

The table’s scientific accounts use different dynamical descriptions; none establishes that 2024 PT5 became a permanent or ordinary Earth satellite. NASA also described a separate close pass in January 2025: even then, the object was expected to be five times farther away than the Moon.
How large was it, and could it be a piece of the Moon?
Size estimates vary with the source and method. NASA’s public estimate is about 33 feet (10 meters) wide. The discovery paper gives a diameter of 5.4 ± 1.2 meters, assuming an albedo—the fraction of light the surface reflects—of 0.21. These are attributed estimates, not interchangeable measurements.

A possible lunar origin is supported by the asteroid’s reflected-light spectrum, but it has not been matched to a particular lunar crater. NASA reported that observations using the Lowell Discovery Telescope and NASA Infrared Telescope Facility found a spectrum more like lunar rock than known asteroid types. The discovery paper likewise found its measured spectrum best matched lunar rock samples, followed by S-complex asteroids. A main-belt origin remains possible.
Composition and motion also support a natural, rather than artificial, object. NASA reported that sunlight’s radiation pressure affected 2024 PT5 too little for it to behave like light human-made debris. That evidence does not identify a specific source for the asteroid.

Was 2024 PT5 dangerous, and can you see it?
NASA says 2024 PT5 does not pose a hazard to Earth. During the distant-companion interval, NASA placed it at about nine lunar distances. Its planned January 2025 close pass was at five lunar distances, still far beyond the Moon’s distance from Earth.
Those distances do not make this a practical “second moon” to look for in the sky. The “mini moon” label describes a dynamical episode, not a bright object visibly accompanying the Moon. The cited NASA accounts do not present it as a general-purpose backyard telescope target.

What “mini moon” means in this case
For 2024 PT5, “mini moon” is a shorthand for a brief episode described by some researchers as capture by the Earth-Moon system. It should not be read as evidence that Earth acquired a second, lasting moon. NASA’s account uses a narrower Earth-orbit meaning of capture and says the asteroid remained in orbit around the Sun.
