E2B may fit code-execution and AI-agent workloads if its session limits, metered compute, and lifecycle model match how your tasks run. Its listed plans combine a plan fee or one-time credit with usage charges, so estimate cost from runtime and resource allocation—not the headline plan alone. Daytona and Modal offer different lifecycle and billing models; neither is automatically cheaper without matching the workload.

How E2B pricing works

E2B’s pricing page, checked on October 7, 2026, lists these plan terms. Pricing, credits, limits, and included allowances can change; confirm the current terms on the E2B pricing page before budgeting.

Plan Plan fee or credit Session limit Concurrent sandboxes
Hobby Free, with a one-time $100 usage credit Up to 1 hour 20
Pro $150 per month, plus usage costs Up to 24 hours 100 included; expandable to 1,100 through add-ons
Enterprise Custom, with committed usage and custom billing Not stated on the pricing page Not stated on the pricing page

E2B bills running compute by the second, with CPU and memory configuration affecting the usage charge. Its listed guide rates include $0.000014 per second for one vCPU, $0.000028 per second for two vCPUs, $0.0000090 per second for two GiB of memory, and $0.0000180 per second for four GiB. These are E2B’s unit rates, not an all-in estimate; see the pricing page and cost calculator for current configuration details. The page also lists free storage allowances, but those do not establish that every storage need is free.

Estimate the bill from your workload

For a useful estimate, model the resources and time your sandboxes actually consume, then add plan and applicable add-on charges. In particular, account for:

  • The CPU and memory allocated to each sandbox.
  • Active compute time, rather than just the time a task remains in a workflow.
  • The plan fee, any applicable storage costs, and any other charges shown for your configuration.

A comparison based only on the Pro monthly fee or a single per-second rate can miss the largest cost drivers: runtime, resource shape, and parallel workload.

What happens when an E2B sandbox pauses or ends?

E2B describes pause, resume, snapshot, and fork as lifecycle capabilities. The practical distinction is whether work can still execute and whether you need to retain a particular state: an active sandbox runs code, a paused one is intended to retain state between execution periods, and killing a sandbox is permanent deletion.

E2B’s surfaced persistence guide says a paused sandbox preserves memory and files but cannot execute code; resume makes it available again. It also indicates that services are unavailable and clients disconnect while paused, so do not assume that a live network connection survives. Detailed timing, retention, and continuous-runtime limits in that guide come from a documentation mirror rather than a confirmed current canonical policy. Check E2B’s current documentation for the behavior and limits that apply to your implementation.

Snapshots and forks may matter when you need to preserve or branch sandbox state, but the exact implementation semantics and limits should be checked in current E2B documentation. Validate the needed behavior with your own workflow before relying on it for recovery or long-running jobs.

How E2B compares with Daytona and Modal

These alternatives are useful to compare by lifecycle and cost model, not by a single advertised rate. Provider CPU units differ, and storage or other charges can change the total.

Provider Lifecycle and state Published billing detail What to verify
E2B Describes pause, resume, snapshot, and fork. Detailed limits should be checked against current canonical documentation. Running compute billed by the second; CPU and memory configuration affect charges. Plan fees and concurrency terms also apply. Current session limits, retention behavior, storage terms, concurrency add-ons, and deployment options.
Daytona Docs distinguish ephemeral and persistent sandboxes. Persistent sandboxes support stop/start, pause/resume, and fork; pause/resume preserves memory and processes. Paused and stopped sandboxes avoid CPU and memory charges, while persistent storage can remain billable. Restrictions for pause in some configurations, including attached volumes and Docker data devices, plus retained-storage charges.
Modal Advertises sandbox execution for untrusted code; the cited pricing page does not establish comparable pause, retention, or fork behavior. Lists CPU at $0.00003942 per physical core-second (noted as corresponding to 2 vCPU) and memory at $0.00000667 per GiB-second. Lifecycle semantics and the actual cost for your resource shape and runtime.

Modal’s listed rates are not directly comparable with E2B’s without normalizing resource units, runtime, and related charges; the rates alone do not establish which service costs less.

Choose by workload requirements

Session length and parallelism

Start with the longest task you need to run and the number of tasks that overlap. Compare both against E2B’s listed session and concurrency terms, and check the equivalent current limits with any alternative. A brief task repeated many times and a long-running task can have very different fit and cost even at the same average concurrency.

State you need to retain

Decide whether each job can start from scratch, whether files alone need to persist, or whether you must keep memory and running processes. Then check whether pause, resume, snapshots, forks, or persistent storage actually support that requirement. Lifecycle labels are not interchangeable: a paused state may retain some resources while cutting off execution, and persistent storage may still incur charges.

Deployment and data boundaries

E2B’s enterprise material describes E2B Cloud, BYOC, private cloud, and Embed deployment choices, with differences in data path, keys, storage, and provisioning. Match those options to your data and infrastructure constraints, and get contractual service and support terms from the Enterprise agreement rather than inferring an SLA from marketing material.

Configuration-specific constraints

Check the requirements most likely to rule out a lifecycle option or provider: attached volumes, Docker data devices, network behavior during pause, and the exact CPU, memory, or storage shape your tasks require. A feature that works for a basic sandbox may not apply to every configuration.

A practical way to make the decision

  1. Describe a representative workload. Record peak concurrent tasks, typical and longest active runtime, CPU and memory per task, and any required files, processes, network connections, volumes, or Docker data.
  2. Map the state requirement. Decide whether tasks are ephemeral or whether they must resume with files, memory, or processes intact. Identify whether snapshots or forks are necessary.
  3. Check current provider limits. Confirm session duration, concurrency, pause restrictions, retention, and deployment choices in the provider’s current documentation and plan terms.
  4. Estimate total cost on a like-for-like basis. Apply each provider’s units to the same runtime and resource configuration, and include plan fees, concurrency add-ons, and any storage charges while compute is idle or stopped.
  5. Test the critical lifecycle path. For a workload that depends on resume, storage, or networking, verify that exact path before committing to it; do not assume a feature name guarantees identical behavior across providers.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

The pricing figures above are provider-published terms checked in 2026, not independent market statistics or a benchmark. A customer testimonial on E2B’s site is also not an independent security audit or performance test. The cited material supports a focused comparison of E2B, Daytona, and Modal; it does not establish a ranking of the entire sandbox market.
