Choose a Dyson WashG1 if washing a large area of hard flooring is your priority and you already have a vacuum for carpets and dry pickup. Choose the V15s Detect Submarine if you want one cordless system for dry vacuuming and wet hard-floor cleaning. Choose a standard cordless stick, such as the V15 Detect or Gen5detect, if you need dry pickup but not floor washing. These are not simply two competing vacuum types: the WashG1 is a dedicated wet floor cleaner, while the V15s is a cordless stick vacuum with a separate wet-cleaning head.
What is the difference between Dyson wet-and-dry and cordless stick models?
“Wet-and-dry” and “cordless stick” describe different things. The Dyson WashG1 is built to wash hard floors; Dyson says it is not a vacuum and is not engineered for carpets. The V15s Detect Submarine is a cordless vacuum that can also wash hard floors when you attach its separate Submarine wet roller head. The figures and product descriptions below are Dyson’s published claims, not results from an independent head-to-head test. Runtime is advertised as “up to” a stated figure; actual use depends on conditions and configuration.

Which Dyson should you buy for your floors?
Choose WashG1 for frequent or large-area hard-floor washing
The WashG1 suits a home where washing hard floors is the central need and a separate vacuum is available for carpets and dry pickup. Dyson says it uses two motorized counter-rotating microfiber rollers and does not rely on vacuum suction. It offers three hydration levels plus a MAX setting. Its stated coverage is larger than the V15s wet-cleaning figure, but both are manufacturer claims rather than independently measured comparisons.
Choose V15s Detect Submarine to combine vacuuming and wet cleaning
The V15s is the more versatile single-system option if you need to vacuum different floor types and also wash hard floors. Wet cleaning is performed with its dedicated roller head, not the dry vacuum head. Check the listing carefully to confirm which heads are included; configurations can differ. Its wet-cleaning coverage is lower than Dyson’s WashG1 claim, so it may be less suited to a large area of hard flooring cleaned in one session.

Choose a standard cordless stick if you do not need to wash floors
A V15 Detect or Gen5detect makes more sense when the job is dry pickup across floor types. Dyson describes the V15 Detect with a Digital Motorbar head for carpets and hard floors and a Fluffy Optic head for hard floors. The V15 page advertises up to 60 minutes, while Gen5detect is listed at up to 70 minutes and 7.6 lb. Those are model-specific manufacturer specifications, not guarantees of runtime in every home. Check the exact bundle, since attachments and regional specifications may differ.

What to check before buying
- Floor mix: If you have carpet, the WashG1 cannot replace a vacuum for it. A V15s or dry stick can handle dry vacuuming with the appropriate included head.
- Hard-floor area: Dyson states over 3,000 sq ft per 1-liter tank for WashG1 and over 1,000 sq ft for V15s wet cleaning. Treat these as Dyson’s coverage claims, not independent test results.
- Appliance count: WashG1 is a dedicated floor washer, so plan on another machine for carpet and general vacuuming. V15s combines dry vacuuming and wet cleaning in one cordless system, using separate heads.
- Runtime: “Up to” figures do not ensure a full cleaning session at a particular power level or with a particular head. Dyson says V15 runtime varies with power mode, debris, floor type, and attachments; wet-cleaning use also depends on the task and configuration.
- Maintenance: Dyson recommends running the WashG1 self-clean cycle after each use and manually cleaning it after every three uses. For V15s and dry sticks, follow the manual for the exact model’s roller, filters, brush head, and battery.
- Package and handling: Compare included heads, battery configuration, weight, and the work you expect to do. A model name alone may not tell you what a particular regional listing includes.
- Price and availability: Check Dyson’s current local listing before deciding. Product prices, stock, and bundles change; the US WashG1 listing observed on October 7, 2026 is not a reliable guide to its current availability or price.
Do you need to vacuum before wet cleaning?
Whether you need to vacuum first depends on the floor and the debris. The V15s offers a dry-vacuuming head for pickup before wet cleaning if needed. The WashG1 is designed to collect wet and dry debris while washing hard floors, but it does not replace a carpet vacuum. If a floor has substantial loose debris, follow the instructions for the specific machine and avoid assuming that the dedicated washer is a general-purpose vacuum.
