The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is a good choice if you want a light cordless stick vacuum mainly for hard floors in a small home. It is a weaker choice for large homes, carpeted rooms, or households with shedding pets, mostly because of its 0.35 L bin and lower suction than Dyson’s V11 and V15 models. The figures below come from Dyson’s own product listings and from one independent hands-on review by TechRadar, with the dates and regions noted where they matter.
Key specifications
Dyson’s US product listing gives the following figures for the V12 Detect Slim. These are manufacturer-listed values, not independent measurements.
| Specification | Dyson US listing |
|---|---|
| Suction | 150 AW |
| Maximum runtime | Up to 60 minutes (setting and tool dependent, see below) |
| Charge time | 4 hours |
| Bin volume | 0.35 L |
| Weight | 5.22 lb (US configuration) |
Dyson Philippines’ product overview describes a removable click-in battery, a washable filter, a Fluffy brush bar, a laser cleaner head for hard floors, and dust sensing. Bundle contents, warranty length, and the exact product name differ by market, so check the listing for your country before you compare prices.
Weight and handling
The main reason to buy this model is how easy it is to use. TechRadar describes it as light and easy to maneuver, with a one-press power button. At 5.22 lb in the US configuration, it is a comfortable machine to lift onto stairs, carry from room to room, or hold overhead for a few minutes to reach a ceiling corner. The trade-off is that a smaller, lighter build leaves less room for a large dust container or a more powerful motor. TechRadar’s reviewer, Managing Editor (APAC) Sharmishta Sarkar, puts it this way: “The smaller, lighter build includes a far smaller bin than you’d find on the average stick vacuum.”
#1 Best Overall
- Laser detects the particles you can’t normally see. A precisely-angled laser makes invisible dust visible on hard floors – so you don’t miss anything.
- Sizes and counts dust particles. Shows results on-screen(LCD) as you clean
- Single-button power control. No need to hold the trigger. You can swap hands while navigating obstacles, making cleaning easier.
- No-touch bin emptying. Hygienic ejection mechanism drives dust and debris deep into your bin, in one action.
- Dyson vacuum drops into the wall-mounted charging dock, ready for your next clean. When left on the charge, the energy-saving battery knows when it’s full and cuts power consumption to a trickle.
Bin size and emptying frequency
The 0.35 L bin is the model’s most important limitation. TechRadar says it may suit a one-bedroom apartment, but in larger or carpeted homes it can mean emptying the bin often during a single clean. If you have pets that shed, or you vacuum a whole house in one session, expect to stop and empty more than you would with a larger bin.
Before you buy, estimate how much debris your typical clean produces. A quick test is to vacuum one room and count how many times you need to empty the bin. If you have to empty it more than once per room, the V12 Detect Slim will feel constraining in daily use.
Rank #2
- Dyson’s lightest intelligent cordless vacuum. Reveals invisible dust
- 30 percent more power. 60 minutes of run time
- Power button operated for continuous cleaning
Suction and carpets
At 150 AW, the V12 Detect Slim is rated below the stronger V11 and V15 models. TechRadar reports that those models provide more suction and larger bins, while the V12 performs well on hard floors. In practice, that means the V12 is a better fit for floors you clean regularly and a weaker fit for thick carpet, rugs with embedded grit, or pet hair that sticks to fabric.

Dyson’s hard-floor cleaner head includes a laser that lights up dust on the floor. The official product description says: “A precisely-angled laser makes invisible dust visible on hard floors.” Dyson also describes a piezo sensor that measures particles passing through the inlet 15,000 times per second, and an Auto mode that can adjust suction based on what it detects.

- Dyson’s lightest intelligent cordless vacuum. Reveals invisible dust.
- 30% more power.¹ 60 minutes of run time.²
- Power button operated for continuous cleaning.
The laser is useful because it shows fine dust you would otherwise miss on a hardwood or tile floor. It does not prove a room is spotless, and the display reflects what the sensor detects rather than a full measure of cleanliness. In the one independent review cited here, TechRadar reports strong hard-floor performance.
One publisher, Modern Castle, reports a 2022 test in which the V12 Detect Slim collected 98.6% of total debris by weight. That is a single test run by that publisher, and it does not show how the machine will perform in every home or on every floor type.
Rank #4
- 【Advanced whole-machine filtration】Traps 99.99% of particles, dust and allergens as small as 0.3 microns in Boost mode. All other modes achieve at least 99.97% filtration. Washable filter can be reused for the lifetime of the machine, reducing waste.
- 【Lightweight versatility for deep cleaning】Converts to a handheld for cleaning cars, stairs and upholstery.
- 【LCD screen displays scientific proof of a deep clean】Calculates and categorizes picked-up particles, showing you on-screen as you clean in auto mode. Also displays run time countdown and power mode.
- 【Two advanced cleaner heads】Laser Slim Fluffy reveals hidden dust on hard floors. Motorbar deep cleans carpets and hard floors, with de-tangling technology.
- 【5 Dyson-engineered accessories】Includes the innovative hair screw tool for removing pet hair.
Runtime by setting and tool
The 60-minute maximum runtime depends on how you use the machine. TechRadar’s testing found:
Recommended Free Tools
- With Eco mode and a non-motorized tool, the 60-minute maximum was achievable.
- With a motorized head or a higher power mode, runtime was shorter. TechRadar did not publish an exact figure for those conditions in the review cited here.
If you plan to clean a full floor with the motorized head in standard mode, do not expect a full hour. For long sessions, the removable click-in battery is the first thing to check when you compare options in your region.
Best Value
- Powerful and intelligent for whole-home deep cleaning. Reveals invisible dust.
- 100% more power.¹ 60 minutes of run time.²
- Power trigger helps maximize energy efficiency, only using power where you need it.
- Intelligently adapts power based on debris detected and floor type. LCD screen shows total picked-up particles on-screen as you clean.³ Also displays power mode, maintenance alerts, and remaining run time to the second.
- 2 Advanced cleaner heads. The Fluffy Optic cleaner head reveals invisible dust. Gentle on hard floors but tough on dirt. The Digital Motorbar cleaner head deep cleans all floor types and de-tangles long hair and pet hair as you clean.
V12 Detect Slim compared with V11 and V15
TechRadar does not publish full specifications for the V11 and V15 in the review cited here, so the table below records only the comparisons that source makes. Cells marked “not stated” mean the cited review does not give that figure.
| Factor | V12 Detect Slim | V11 and V15 |
|---|---|---|
| Bin capacity | 0.35 L (Dyson US listing) | Larger than the V12 (TechRadar); exact volume not stated |
| Suction | 150 AW (Dyson US listing) | More than the V12 (TechRadar); exact AW not stated |
| Weight | 5.22 lb (US configuration) | Not stated in the cited review |
| Best fit | Small homes, mostly hard floors | Larger homes, carpet, heavier cleaning |
Who should buy it, and who should skip it
The V12 Detect Slim makes sense if most of these are true for your home:
- Most of your floors are hard surfaces such as wood, tile, or laminate.
- Your home is small enough that a 0.35 L bin will last a full clean.
- You value light weight and easy handling over maximum suction.
- You are comfortable with a runtime that depends on the head and mode you use.
Look at a larger Dyson model, such as the V11 or V15, if you have carpeted rooms, shedding pets, a larger home, or you want to clean the whole house in one session without emptying the bin.
