The Dynabook Portégé X40-M is a 14-inch Windows 11 Pro business laptop built around Intel Core Ultra processors. Dynabook announced the original model on July 30, 2024, promoting its AI capabilities through processor-based NPU acceleration and Windows Copilot. It is designed for office productivity and business connectivity—not as a dedicated AI-training workstation. A later Series 2 announcement in May 2025 introduced Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processors and Wi-Fi 7, so the generation matters when comparing configurations.
What is the Dynabook Portégé X40-M?
The Portégé X40-M is a 14-inch business laptop running Windows 11 Pro. Dynabook Americas announced the original model on July 30, 2024, with Intel Core Ultra processors and Copilot as part of its AI messaging. Dynabook ANZ announced regional availability on August 15, 2024, saying it would arrive in that market at the end of August. Those dates describe specific announcements, not current availability in every country.
Dynabook General Manager James Robbins described the launch as an evolution of an established business line, saying: “The Portégé X40 has been one of Dynabook’s best-selling laptops for years, and I believe that this latest iteration of an already-winning formula will further solidify the Portégé line as an indispensable booster of business efficiency and productivity.”
What does “advanced AI” mean on the X40-M?
Dynabook’s AI claims refer to a combination of Intel Core Ultra processor features, Windows Copilot access and optional conferencing hardware. The processor’s NPU is intended to accelerate supported local AI workloads. A dedicated Copilot key provides access to Microsoft’s assistant, subject to Windows version, market and service availability.

Some configurations offer an IR camera for Windows Hello face sign-in, and Dynabook describes the camera and related hardware as supporting AI-enhanced video and audio conferencing. These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that all configurations include the same camera or conferencing functions. The X40-M is a productivity laptop with AI-related features; the launch description does not establish it as a machine for training large AI models.
Series 1 and Series 2: what changed?
Dynabook announced the original Series 1 in 2024 and the X40-M Series 2 on May 7, 2025. The Series 2 announcement specifies Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processors and Wi-Fi 7. The cited Series 1 specification lists Wi-Fi 6E and supports up to Core Ultra 7 vPro. Check the generation and local SKU before buying: specifications and configurations can differ by region.

Security features and configuration caveats
The cited specifications list Microsoft Secured-core PC certification and TPM 2.0, alongside a webcam shutter slider and security-lock slot. Fingerprint reading and an IR camera for face authentication are optional, as is Intel Authenticate support. Treat these as available platform features rather than a promise that every configuration includes every security control; verify the exact SKU and region.

What independent testing says—and does not say
TechRadar reviewed one X40-M configuration on August 17, 2025: an Intel Core Ultra 5 225U system with 16 GB of DDR5 RAM, a 512 GB NVMe SSD, a 5 MP camera, Wi-Fi 6E and Windows 11 Pro. The review characterized that tested unit as a business and office laptop with extensive connectivity. Its observations and benchmark results apply to that configuration; they should not be treated as measurements for every X40-M, especially Series 2 models with a different processor generation.
