The New York Rangers beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 at Little Caesars Arena on October 2, 2026, with Dylan Garand stopping 22 shots for his first NHL shutout. It came in his fourth NHL game and spoiled Detroit’s season opener.
How the Rangers took the lead
Sean Durzi opened the scoring at 5:12 of the first period, converting a power play on a feed from Gabe Perreault. It was Durzi’s first goal with New York. He appeared to score again at 7:10, but Detroit challenged the play for offside and the goal was overturned. NHL.com’s game recap details both plays.
Garand shuts out Detroit
Garand made 22 saves, according to matching recaps from NHL.com and the Detroit Red Wings. The AP recap carried by theScore reports 23 saves, so accounts differ; the two NHL team/league recaps agree on 22. The shutout was Garand’s first in the NHL. He had gone 2-0-1 in three appearances late last season, NHL.com reported.

Detroit’s offense faded late
The Red Wings had 20 shots through two periods but managed only two in the third, according to NHL.com. Eeli Tolvanen scored into the empty net at 18:44 of the third to make it 2-0.
“We didn’t give up a lot. Going the other way, though, we’re going to have to score some goals to win games. We had some looks, not near enough. So, that’s going to have to get polished up,” Detroit head coach Todd McLellan said in the Red Wings’ official recap.

What the shutout means for Garand
The Rangers’ postgame notes say Garand became the eighth rookie goaltender in franchise history to record a first career shutout within four NHL games or fewer. The team also noted that his point streak reached four games, with a 3-0-1 record, and that he was the first Ranger to earn a point in each of his first four NHL games since Henrik Lundqvist in 2005-06.
Schedule context
Detroit was opening its season, while New York was playing its third game and second night in a row. The Rangers had beaten Tampa Bay 5-1 the night before and were playing their third game in four nights to start the season, per NHL.com.
