A multi-year study of the House of Orange-Nassau’s colonial history concluded that Dutch stadtholders and monarchs actively supported colonialism and slavery and approved the suppression of resistance, according to King Willem-Alexander’s summary when the findings were presented on 2 October 2026. The King said the work confirmed that rulers did not act to address these injustices. The conclusion is the King’s account of the researchers’ findings, not a substitute for the study’s detailed evidence.
What did the study find about the Dutch royal house?
At the presentation, Willem-Alexander told the researchers: “You have shown that our stadholders and monarchs actively supported colonialism and slavery, and approved the suppression of resistance.” He also said their work confirmed that rulers did not act to address those injustices. These are the King’s remarks summarizing the study, rather than passages quoted from its full report.
Al Jazeera’s reporting described the study’s conclusion as assigning the House of Orange responsibility for the survival of Dutch slave trading and slavery over centuries, and said most rulers showed no objections. That is secondary reporting; the King’s remarks and the Royal House announcement establish the publicly available summary and project details, but do not provide the underlying evidence for each ruler’s role.
What period and research does the project cover?
The Royal House says the project examines the House of Orange-Nassau’s colonial history from the late sixteenth century into the postcolonial present. Its public-facing summary is titled Oranje en de Koloniën, 1600–2025. De koloniale geschiedenis van het Huis Oranje-Nassau. The title’s 1600–2025 dates and the announcement’s broader description of the research period are not identical, so they should not be treated as interchangeable descriptions of the full scope.

According to the Royal House announcement, the multi-year project involved around 60 researchers and resulted in five books. The five books describe the research project’s outputs; they are not a measure of the historical scale of enslavement or trade.
How involved was the Royal House in the study?
The Royal House announcement says the research followed customary standards of academic integrity and independence, and that the Royal House had no substantive involvement in designing the study or formulating its findings. The study was presented to the King, who publicly acknowledged its conclusions and his family’s role in colonial history.

Willem-Alexander said: “I feel that I have a responsibility to our society, and to the descendants of enslaved people, to provide clarity about the role that my family played in colonial history.”

The Dutch government describes more than 300 years in which adults and children were abducted from parts of Africa by Dutch and other slave traders and transported to former Dutch colonies, including Suriname and Caribbean islands. It also notes that enslaved people were sold and transported in parts of Asia under Dutch colonial rule, and that slavery’s effects remain present in society. This provides national context; it does not by itself establish the House of Orange-Nassau’s specific actions or degree of responsibility.

The publicly available remarks and announcement establish the project’s broad conclusion, scope and scale, but do not provide the study’s detailed methodology, archival examples or qualifications. They do not establish the precise influence of each ruler, individual financial benefits, or a quantitative total attributable to the royal house. No central historical total is stated in those official materials, and the project’s figures of around 60 researchers and five books must not be mistaken for such totals. The full study is needed to assess those finer-grained claims.
