Choose Dungeon Munchies if you want a side-scrolling action RPG where cooking and eating creatures directly shape your abilities. Choose Cuisineer if you want dungeon runs to supply a second gameplay loop: cooking dishes, serving customers, and running a restaurant. They both put food at the center, but they are different kinds of games.
At a glance: what separates the games?
| Question | Dungeon Munchies | Cuisineer |
|---|---|---|
| Core format | Side-scrolling action RPG set in a vast underground complex. | Roguelite-style dungeon crawler with restaurant management between expeditions. |
| What food does | Meals made from hunted creatures grant abilities, making food part of character progression. | Ingredients gathered in dungeons become recipes for the restaurant and its customers. |
| Main extra activity | Combat, survival, and progression as you try to escape. | Restaurant operation, customization, and customer service. |
| Best fit | Players who want food tied closely to action and build choices. | Players who want dungeon combat alongside a substantial cooking-and-management loop. |
How does food work in each game?
Dungeon Munchies makes food part of your character build
In Dungeon Munchies, the central cycle is hunt, cook, and eat. Dishes made from creatures grant abilities, so food is a way to shape how your character plays—not a separate business to operate. The game’s premise sends a revived protagonist through a vast underground complex with help from Simmer, an undead necro-chef, while trying to stay fed, stay safe, and escape.

That makes it the more direct choice if the appeal is experimenting with food-powered abilities as part of an action campaign. Steam lists maJAJa as both developer and publisher; the full release was July 27, 2022, after Early Access began June 5, 2019.

Cuisineer turns ingredients into restaurant work
Cuisineer links dungeon expeditions to the fortunes of Pom’s family restaurant. You gather ingredients, return to Paell, cook, and serve customers while working to reopen the indebted establishment. Marvelous Games says the game has more than 100 recipes. It also describes procedurally generated biomes whose size, shape, and resources change between visits, plus flavor powers including Salty, Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Umami, Frosty, and Toasty.
#1 Best Overall
- Hours of anime-inspired action adventure set over 9 fantastical worlds.
- Hundreds of ingredients, items, recipes, weapons and combinations to build your own custom skillset.
- 3 difficulty levels - Apprentice to Executive Chef – to make the game accessible to everyone.
- Deep story full of strange characters, dark humor, and plot twists! Over 40 original tracks, composed by rAYE.
- Languages - English, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, and Traditional Chinese in-game text.
The restaurant is not merely a framing device for food-themed combat: it adds another ongoing activity to the game. Choose Cuisineer if managing the business and meeting customer needs sounds as appealing as exploring dungeons. If you would rather keep the food mechanic focused on combat and character abilities, Dungeon Munchies is the closer match.
How do their combat and overall structure differ?
Dungeon Munchies is the more focused action adventure
Dungeon Munchies is explicitly described as a side-scrolling action RPG. Its bizarre underground escape premise gives the adventure a clear direction, while hunting and cooking feed into the abilities you use. Its structure is a better fit for someone looking for an action RPG rather than a game that regularly shifts into running a shop.
Rank #2
- Big Menu for a Big Stomach - With a stomach that can only take seven dishes, you must put together a meal that maximises your abilities. Guava juice, grilled shrimp, or crab stirfry may mean the difference between health recovery, damage output or a watery shield!
- Tools of the Trade - Craft all kinds of deadly weapons out of the animal and plant parts you can’t eat. Pair them with your favorite dishes to create the most overpowered combat combo!
- Farm-fresh & Locally-sourced - In this day and age, ingredients are hard to come by. Be prepared to face off electriacl snails, razor-sharp shrimp claws, and laser wasps to get the delicious parts you need!
- Something Doesn’t Feel Right… - From the self-professed-AAA-license-holding necro-chef, to the diabolical voodoo “Lord of the Forest”, to the radical revolutionaries of the fruit revolution, everyone wants you to do their thing, but no one’s really right in the head. What’s really happening down in this dungeon?
Cuisineer alternates between expeditions and management
Cuisineer is described by its publisher as a roguelite and management game. Its combat uses cooking utensils and gear against food-themed enemies, with flavor powers adding elemental variety. Procedurally generated biomes mean dungeon visits can differ in layout and available resources; between them, the restaurant gives those resources an economic and service-oriented purpose.
Which one should you play?
- Pick Dungeon Munchies for side-scrolling action, an underground escape story, and meals that directly grant abilities.
- Pick Cuisineer if you want to alternate dungeon crawling with recipes, restaurant customization, and customer service.
- If you are undecided, ask whether operating the restaurant sounds like a compelling second half of the game. If yes, Cuisineer’s structure is likely a better fit; if not, Dungeon Munchies keeps food closely tied to the action-RPG loop.
