Funcom’s Joel Bylos described a game shaped by two practical constraints: coordinating licensed content with rights holder Legendary, and keeping players engaged without putting ads into Dune: Awakening. The available interview text also raises questions about Hollywood’s influence and photorealism, but does not provide enough detail to establish Bylos’s arguments on those subjects.
How Funcom handled approvals with Legendary
According to an interview republication that identifies Bylos as Funcom’s chief creative officer, Funcom submitted items for Legendary’s approval through Jira. Bylos said delayed approvals could be escalated and characterized the process as usually automated and reliable. The republication displays a last-updated date of October 2, 2026; that date does not independently establish when the interview statements were made.
This account offers a glimpse of the coordination involved in making a game tied to an established fictional property: creative submissions pass through a rights-holder workflow, with a mechanism to address delays. It does not describe the specific assets reviewed, approval timelines, or how disagreements were resolved.

Bylos discussed adding events to keep players engaged. In the interview text, he described Dune: Awakening at the time as a premium game with paid downloadable content. He said future business-model decisions would depend on industry trends and what made sense for the game.
#1 Best Overall
- Step into the world of Dune and explore an immersive, open world Arrakis, from sandworm-infested deserts to the sprawling city of Arrakeen
- Experience a unique, cinematic Dune story that gives clear meaning and purpose to your otherwise freeform survival crafting journey
- From the slow blade to epic firepower, train and progress as a Swordmaster, Bene Gesserit, Trooper, and Mentat to unlock their signature weapons and abilities
- Rise from survival to greatness as you grow your own piece of Arrakis from a modest crafting base into a sprawling fortress, or secure your fortune by chasing spice blows and running your own spice-refining operation
- Play single-player and customize every aspect of your experience, or go online to team up with friends on private or public multiplayer servers
The discussion also mentions battle-pass-and-store models and free-to-play approaches, but provides no measured comparison of their results. It supports a description of the options under discussion, not a claim that one model produces better retention or revenue.
Why Bylos said Dune: Awakening would not have in-game ads
Bylos said Funcom would not put in-game advertising in Dune: Awakening. He recalled a different experiment in Anarchy Online, Funcom’s 2001 game: paid advertising banners that he considered a fit for its futuristic-city setting and, in his account, did not harm the player experience.
The contrast is contextual rather than a general endorsement of ads in games. Bylos’s account suggests that whether an ad feels appropriate depends on the world in which it appears; it does not establish that players universally accepted the banners or that the approach would work in another game.
What the available interview establishes about Hollywood and photorealism
The republication’s headline refers to “copying Hollywood” and argues that style beats photorealism, but the accessible interview text does not substantiate the detailed reasoning behind either phrase. It would be misleading to attribute a particular visual-design philosophy or production practice to Bylos based on the headline alone.
Rank #2
- Expansion for Dune: Imperium
- Make shadowy deals with the Tleilaxu to harvest genetic specimens
- Graft cards together to empower your Agents
- Explore a universe of possibilities with Dune: Imperium – Immortality
That leaves an important distinction: the interview text supports the reported comments on approvals, retention, and advertising, while the headline’s visual-style framing remains unverified here. Readers should treat it as a subject the headline raises, not as a fully documented conclusion about how Dune: Awakening was made.
