A dumbo octopus is a finned deep-sea octopus, named for the two prominent fins above its eyes. Those fins and its webbed arms help it swim through deep water. The animal is not generally known to be pink: NOAA describes dumbo octopuses as usually pale or unpigmented. Its “message” is less a deliberate signal than a reminder that deep-sea life—and the habitats it depends on—remain difficult to observe and vulnerable to disturbance.
What is a dumbo octopus?
“Dumbo octopus” is a common name for finned octopods in the cirrate group. NOAA’s overview uses Grimpoteuthis spp. and links the nickname to the large, ear-like fins above the eyes. The group includes multiple species, and footage alone does not always establish which one is on camera.
NOAA’s Ocean Today transcript identifies a white Grimpoteuthis bathynectes filmed in September 2005, 200 miles off Oregon at 6,600 feet, near hydrothermal vent fields associated with the Juan de Fuca Ridge. NOAA’s narrator explains: “This octopod, Grimpoteuthis bathynectes, is nicknamed “Dumbo” because of its large “ear” like fins.” NOAA Ocean Today

Pink can be a charming way to depict one, but it is not a reliable description of the group’s usual appearance. NOAA says dumbo octopuses are usually pale or unpigmented and lack chromatophores—the pigment cells many other octopuses use to change color. They therefore cannot change color for camouflage in the same way. Individuals and images can look different; the evidence does not support calling all dumbo octopuses pink.

How does it swim?
The ear-like fins are functional, not just distinctive. Dumbo octopuses propel themselves with their fins, while their webbed arms also assist movement. NOAA notes that finned deep-sea octopods in the Cirrata suborder rely primarily on their fins for locomotion rather than jet propulsion. The mantle is the muscular body region that holds the organs and gills. In the 2005 Oregon footage, NOAA also points to the animal’s webbed arms as part of its swimming. The same transcript raises questions about how well these octopods see and what the small sensory structures on their arms, called cirri, do; it does not answer them. NOAA Ocean Today

How deep can a dumbo octopus live?
There is no single observation that should be treated as the group’s universal depth limit. NOAA’s educational overview records an observation in Papahānaumokuākea at more than 5,250 feet (1,600 meters), and its 2005 Oregon account describes footage at 6,600 feet. Both are records of particular observations, not proof of a maximum for every species. NOAA dumbo octopus overview
A 2020 study by Alan J. Jamieson and Michael Vecchione reported in situ high-definition video lander observations of demersal Grimpoteuthis sp. at 5,760 and 6,957 meters in the Indian Ocean. The authors said the sightings extended the known maximum cephalopod depth range by 1,812 meters and raised their estimate of potential benthic habitat available to cephalopods from 75% to 99% of the global seafloor. What does a dumbo octopus eat?
NOAA’s group-level overview lists snails, worms, bivalves, isopods, and other small prey. That is a broad description of reported dumbo-octopus feeding, not a confirmed menu for every species or individual. NOAA dumbo octopus overview
What can footage tell us—and what can’t it?
Deep-sea video reveals behavior in place, but an image may not provide enough evidence to identify an animal to species. During a 2014 Gulf of Mexico expedition, NOAA researchers observed a Grimpoteuthis octopod coil its arms into tight spirals, a posture NOAA said had not previously been observed. The animal was not collected, so the researchers could not confirm its species. The sighting is useful evidence of a behavior, while its identification remains at the genus level. Why does deep-sea habitat matter?
NOAA describes deep-sea octopuses as living in cold, oxygen-rich water and notes habitats such as rocky canyon walls, volcanic slopes, and boulder-strewn seafloors. These are broad notes about deep-sea octopuses, not an exclusive habitat map for dumbo octopuses. Its overview describes deep-sea species occurring to 10,000 feet (3,000 meters), while the deeper Indian Ocean observations above show why a general description should not be mistaken for a hard limit. The authors also concluded that cold-water octocorals appear important as natal habitat and that damage to these corals through bottom trawling or mining will affect populations of mobile animals such as dumbo octopods. What the “message from the deep” means
A dumbo octopus does not need to be pink, or to send a deliberate warning, to make the phrase resonate. Its fins, pale appearance, and rare appearances on deep-sea cameras offer a glimpse of animals that are hard to study. The more consequential message is ecological: some mobile deep-sea animals may depend on vulnerable coral habitat, and destructive activity on the seafloor can affect life beyond the immediate site.
