Duckweed and Wolffia are floating freshwater plants suited to still or slowly moving water. Give them access to light, then watch how much of the surface they cover: a dense mat can shade plants below. Their exact care depends on the plant and tank, and the available sources do not establish universal aquarium targets for light duration, temperature, pH, hardness, or tank size.
How to tell duckweed and Wolffia apart
Common names can overlap, so identify the plant by its visible form before relying on species-specific advice. Typical duckweed has small roots hanging below its leaves. Wolffia, also called watermeal, has no roots and looks like tiny grains floating at the surface. The North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox describes Wolffia as rootless and adapted to still or slowly moving water.
Both are floating plants: they draw nutrients from the water rather than from the aquarium bed. Their shared surface-dwelling habit makes coverage and water movement practical care considerations, but it does not make the two plant groups interchangeable.

Light supports growth, and bright light can contribute to rapid Wolffia growth when conditions are favorable. The North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox reports that Wolffia can double in size every two days under warm water and bright light. Treat that as a conditional growth possibility, not a guaranteed aquarium rate.
#1 Best Overall
- Unique Floating Plants: Salvinia Minima, commonly known as Water Spangles, are fascinating live aquarium plants that float on the water surface.
- Compact Size: These tiny plants form a dense mat, creating a lush green carpet on the water's surface.
- Easy Care: Low maintenance, these plants thrive in medium to high lighting conditions.
- Natural Habitat: Ideal for adding a touch of nature to fish tanks, terrariums, or water gardens.
- Versatile: Suitable for both freshwater and brackish water environments, making them adaptable to various aquatic setups.
As floating plants multiply, they can form a surface layer that blocks light from reaching submerged plants. Thin the cover or maintain open surface areas if plants below are being shaded. There is no universal coverage percentage established here; respond to the light needs and condition of the plants in your aquarium.
Water movement and tank conditions
Still or slowly moving surface water is consistent with the described habitat of Wolffia. That does not establish that all filter movement must be eliminated. Observe whether the floating plants remain at the surface and whether water movement is disrupting their distribution.

Duckweed growth can vary with light, pH, temperature, carbon dioxide, nutrient availability, and crowding, according to Aquarium Co-Op’s duckweed guide. Because those conditions interact, one setting should not be treated as a reliable prescription for every aquarium.
The sources do not verify a universal aquarium-specific target for photoperiod, light intensity, temperature, pH, hardness, or tank size. Avoid treating values intended for outdoor ponds or cultivation as general aquarium settings; use the needs of your other tank inhabitants and the response of the plants to guide adjustments.

Managing growth in an aquarium
- Confirm what you have. Check for the small hanging roots typical of duckweed or the rootless, grain-like appearance of Wolffia.
- Watch the surface. Note whether the plants are staying afloat and how quickly their coverage is expanding.
- Check light below the mat. If submerged plants are losing light, remove some of the floating growth to restore open surface area.
- Adjust in response to the tank. Consider light, nutrients, water movement, and crowding together rather than changing a single unsupported numeric target.
If buying a starter plant, check its identity: sellers may use “duckweed” broadly, while Wolffia is a distinct, rootless plant.
