Dubai Police’s Hoversurf Scorpion was a real electric hoverbike prototype unveiled at GITEX Technology Week in 2017—not a flying motorcycle already serving as routine police transport. Contemporary reports said it could be ridden or remotely controlled and quoted a top speed near 70 km/h, but those were demonstration-era specifications, not independently verified or current performance figures.
What was the Hoversurf flying bike?
The vehicle was Hoversurf’s Scorpion, also called the Scorpion-3 in some contemporary coverage. It used four large propellers and was described as a cross between a drone and a motorcycle. Dubai Police presented it at GITEX Technology Week in 2017 as a possible way for officers to reach emergencies through heavy traffic. Futurism’s 2017 report and The National’s coverage describe the unveiling; Gulf News reported that the vehicle was undergoing tests.
How fast and far could it fly?
Reports published around the 2017 unveiling gave broadly similar, but not identical, figures. These are reported specifications for a prototype or demonstration vehicle, not results from an independent performance test.

A later specification provides useful context, not a direct confirmation of the 2017 figures. The International Civil Aviation Organization’s 2018 innovation catalogue listed a Hoversurf S3 with a hybrid-type battery, up to 40 minutes in drone mode, and roughly 10–25 minutes with a pilot depending on weight and weather. Those figures refer to the later S3 specification and should not be treated as a revision or independent validation of every Scorpion-3 claim. ICAO’s 2018 innovation catalogue.

Could Dubai Police actually use it?
The concept was that an officer could ride the craft to get above congested roads and reach an emergency, or that it could fly without a passenger under remote control. First Sergeant Ali Ahmad Mohammad of Dubai Police’s VIP Security Department told Gulf News that it could carry a policeman in emergency situations and heavy traffic. The same report said the vehicle was undergoing tests, which places it in a prototype or demonstration context—not evidence of routine deployment.
The unveiling therefore showed a police-associated experimental vehicle and a proposed use, not proof that Dubai Police had put flying motorcycles into regular service. The available reports do not establish a current fleet count, regulatory approval, or an active operational role.

Was it available to buy?
The reports about the Dubai unveiling do not establish broad consumer availability or a current sales channel. They describe a test-stage vehicle, and their historical performance figures should not be read as present-day specifications or a promise of availability.

Dubai’s “city of the future” framing reflected the ambition behind the demonstration: a compact electric aircraft that might bypass road traffic. The Scorpion’s reported ability to fly with a rider or under remote control made the idea visually compelling, but the practical questions are more demanding than a top-speed figure. They include useful endurance under load, safe operation around people, rotor protection, remote-control reliability, flight rules, and whether testing leads to a deployable service. The contemporaneous reports establish the unveiling and the claims made about the craft; they do not establish that those broader hurdles were solved.
