Neither Dubai International Airport (DXB) nor Zayed International Airport (AUH) is automatically the better alternative when flights are disrupted. Choose based on a specific confirmed flight, your ticket-recovery options, whether you can legally enter or transit the UAE, baggage requirements, and whether you can reach the other airport in time. Check with the airline before travelling to a different airport: an airport being open does not mean your flight is operating.
What matters more than choosing DXB or AUH
Start with the flight, not the airport’s general status. Abu Dhabi’s live travel advisory says AUH is open and operational but directs passengers to check current flight information with their airline. It describes alternative arrangements during disruption as available “where possible,” not guaranteed. Read the Abu Dhabi travel advisory.
For the airport you are considering, verify the operating airline, destination, departure time, seat availability or confirmed rebooking, and whether that particular flight is running. Check the airport’s live departures information too, but treat the airline as the source for your booking and flight-specific instructions. AUH publishes a live departures page.

Compare the practical consequences before switching
Moving from DXB to AUH, or the reverse, is not the same as connecting between flights at one airport. A different airport means a road journey and may also involve entering the UAE, collecting checked baggage, and checking in again. The right choice depends on your itinerary and what the airline will do with your existing ticket.

| What to check | Why it affects the decision |
|---|---|
| Confirmed flight | Confirm the airline, destination, time, seat or rebooking, and operating status. A general airport status cannot confirm your flight. |
| Ticket recovery | Ask the airline or booking provider about rebooking, cancellation, or refund options before buying a separate ticket. Find out whether self-rerouting changes your rights or the handling of the original booking. |
| Ground transfer | Check current transport availability, timetable, pickup point, road conditions, journey time, and cost. AUH lists Airport Express between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as well as taxis, ride-hailing, rental cars, and private transfers; its published material does not establish a dependable universal journey time between airports. See Airport Express and AUH transport options. |
| Entry and baggage | Confirm that you can enter the UAE if required, whether you must clear immigration, and whether checked baggage must be collected and checked in again. Ask the airline what applies to your itinerary. |
| Connection and assistance | Check the airline’s minimum connection time, baggage through-check, terminal and security steps, and any assistance you need, including mobility support, meals, or accommodation. |
Contact the airline before self-rerouting
Before purchasing a replacement flight or travelling across emirates, contact the operating airline or booking provider using official channels. Ask whether they can rebook or refund the disrupted ticket, how baggage will be handled, and what happens to the original ticket if you arrange your own alternative. Keep your reservation contact details current so you can receive changes and instructions.

Allow for the separate airport transfer
Only arrange transport after confirming that the flight you intend to take is operating and that you are permitted to board it. Check the live schedule, pickup instructions, and estimated road journey directly with the transport operator. AUH promotes Airport Express service between Abu Dhabi and Dubai and lists other ground-transport options, but the information consulted does not provide a reliable door-to-door DXB–AUH travel-time comparison.

A transfer to another airport can require immigration clearance and baggage collection before you can begin the road journey, followed by a new check-in and security screening. Confirm each step with the airline and relevant airport before committing to a departure time.

Do not mistake an AUH connection for an airport change
AUH’s transfer guide describes connections within Zayed International Airport: follow Transfer signs, complete transfer security, check the onward gate, and confirm with your originating airline whether baggage is through-checked. The airline sets the minimum connection time for the specific itinerary. Read the AUH transfer guide.
The guide gives 45 minutes as an example of a possible minimum connection time for an Etihad-to-Etihad connection; that figure is not a general connection guarantee. Ask the airline for the minimum applicable to your flights and allow for the procedures and delay risk on your itinerary.

Follow specific instructions during exceptional disruptions
Operational conditions and recovery arrangements can change quickly. On 5 March 2026, Abu Dhabi authorities told confirmed-ticket holders to contact their airline and travel to AUH only after receiving guidance about when to arrive. The notice also reported that, during that specific disruption, more than 4,300 complimentary hotel rooms across 74 hotels supported approximately 7,000 passengers. That was a dated response, not a standing entitlement or forecast. Read the 5 March 2026 Abu Dhabi Media Office notice.

A later Abu Dhabi Media Office release dated 28 March 2026 described a safe, orderly resumption of operations. These dated notices show why past recovery measures or a broad statement of airport status cannot predict what will happen in a future disruption. A practical decision sequence
- Find an operating option: Check the flight with the airline and the relevant airport’s live departures information. Confirm your seat or rebooking before setting out for another emirate.
- Protect the original booking: Ask the airline or booking provider about rebooking, refund, baggage, and the effect of buying a separate ticket.
- Check border and baggage steps: Confirm UAE entry eligibility and whether immigration, baggage collection, or a new check-in is required.
- Verify the road transfer: Confirm transport availability, schedule, pickup point, and journey estimate directly with the operator before relying on it.
- For an AUH connection, confirm the details: Ask the airline for its itinerary-specific minimum connection time and baggage arrangements, then follow airport transfer instructions.
- In an exceptional disruption, wait for directions: Follow current airline and airport instructions about whether and when to travel.
Can the airports be ranked by disruption resilience?
The cited official material does not establish a comparable DXB-versus-AUH ranking for disruption frequency, cancellation rates, average recovery time, or resilience. It also does not establish a universal inter-airport journey time or an individual passenger’s rebooking entitlement. Treat comparisons on those measures as unproven and decide using the flight and itinerary details available at the time.
