Dual-screen phones are not one product type. Some have two separate display panels joined by a hinge, so the phone opens into a book-style workspace. Others are ordinary phones that pair with a detachable second-screen accessory. The two approaches differ in bulk, in how the second display behaves, and in how long the manufacturer keeps the device supported. The two best-documented examples are Microsoft’s Surface Duo line and the LG V60 ThinQ with LG Dual Screen. The Surface Duo 2 is the one to scrutinise most closely: Microsoft says it has reached end of servicing and will no longer receive newer Android version or security updates.
Two designs sold under the same label
Before comparing models, it helps to separate the hardware approaches, because the trade-offs follow from the design.
- Two-panel dual-screen phones. Two rigid display panels are joined by a hinge. Each half is a complete screen, and the open device gives a larger combined workspace. Microsoft’s Surface Duo line is the clearest example.
- Phone plus detachable second screen. A conventional handset clips to or connects with an accessory that carries its own display. The LG V60 ThinQ with LG Dual Screen follows this model.
- Single flexible inner-screen foldables. One bendable panel folds inward. This is a foldable phone rather than a two-panel design, so it is compared on different terms and is outside the scope of this guide.
Microsoft Surface Duo: the two-panel line
Surface Duo (first generation)
The first Surface Duo uses two PixelSense displays joined by a hinge. Microsoft lists the open dual display at 8.1 inches combined and each single display at 5.6 inches. The handset weighs 250 g and uses a Snapdragon 855 processor, according to Microsoft’s Surface Duo specifications page. Its battery claim is covered in the battery section below, because the test conditions matter more than the headline figure.
Surface Duo 2
The Surface Duo 2 also uses two separate PixelSense Fusion displays in a folding handset. Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 support page gives 8.3 inches of open display space. Microsoft describes two-app use cases, a feature it calls the Glance Bar, 5G connectivity, and support for Android apps. Accessories are model-specific: Microsoft lists the Surface Duo 2 Bumper as sold separately, so confirm that a case is made for this exact model before buying one.

LG V60 ThinQ with LG Dual Screen
The LG V60 ThinQ is a conventional phone with a 6.8-inch OLED main display, a Snapdragon 865 processor and a 5,000 mAh battery, according to LG’s specifications. The second screen is not built into the handset. It belongs to the LG Dual Screen accessory, which has a 2.1-inch cover display and a 360-degree hinge. LG Canada’s page for model LMV600TM2X describes the connection as USB-C.
The main trade-off is physical. The phone and accessory together are bulkier than a single handset, and the combination depends on the exact V60 model. Do not assume that every carrier version or regional variant of the V60 works with the accessory interchangeably. Check the model number before buying either part.

At launch, Morris Lee, then president of LG’s Mobile Communication Company, framed the device this way: “Our strategy is to introduce differentiated 5G devices to meet the rise in consumer demands as the global 5G market matures.” That is a statement about LG’s launch strategy, not a current assessment of the market.

The table shows a clear gap. The only manufacturer pages cited for these models do not allow a like-for-like ranking on weight, runtime or processor performance, so the choice depends on what you need the phone to do.
Reading the battery figures
- Surface Duo: up to 15.5 hours. Microsoft gives this figure from a July 2020 test. It used preproduction devices, repeated 1080p/24fps local video, and a single screen under the settings Microsoft specified. Microsoft warns that actual battery life changes with usage and configuration, so treat the number as a laboratory result rather than a typical day.
- LG V60: 5,000 mAh. This is battery capacity. It is not a runtime estimate, and LG’s cited pages do not state how long the phone lasts in use.
- No cross-model comparison. The manufacturer material does not test the models under shared conditions, so a battery comparison between a Surface Duo and a V60 would be unsupported.
Software support: the main ownership check
Software support matters more for these phones than the hinge design. Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 support page states: “This device has reached its end-of-servicing date based on the Surface Lifecycle for Android-based devices and will no longer receive newer Android version and security updates.” That is the most current manufacturer statement in this guide, and it means a Surface Duo 2 bought today will not receive new Android versions or security patches from Microsoft.

The first-generation Surface Duo’s Android 10 entry and the V60’s Android 10 entry come from launch specifications. They describe what the device shipped with. They do not tell you whether the device is still receiving updates, and you should not infer a current update status from them.

- Exact model and carrier variant, including the model number on the box or in settings.
- Network compatibility for your carrier and bands, particularly for 5G on the Surface Duo 2.
- Screen and hinge condition on both panels, or on the phone and the accessory separately.
- Whether the LG Dual Screen accessory is included, and whether it connects and displays correctly.
- Battery condition, and whether the seller reports the battery health.
- Software support: confirm the update status above before you accept the device.
- The seller’s return policy and whether the sale is a refurbished or a private sale.
What this guide does not establish
The manufacturer pages behind this guide document these devices and their specifications, and they include one current support caveat. They do not establish a complete list of dual-screen phones sold new in October 2026, current prices, retail stock or condition grades. Check those details with the seller or retailer before buying, and treat any availability claim as a point-in-time check.

The Bottom Line
If you need a dual-screen phone that will receive future Android and security updates, neither the Surface Duo 2 nor the other models covered here can meet that need on the evidence available, so it is best to look at current options from manufacturers who publish a support commitment. If you accept a used device without ongoing updates, the Surface Duo 2 offers the most documented two-panel workspace, and the LG V60 with Dual Screen is the more compact choice only if you are comfortable with an accessory and a model-specific pairing.
