Neither dual monitors nor one ultrawide is better for everyone. Choose two displays if you want apps on separate physical screens or need flexible placement; choose an ultrawide if you prefer one continuous, wide workspace without a center bezel. Your desk, computer’s display support, the specific monitors, and total cost should decide the purchase—not a blanket promise of higher productivity.
How the two setups differ
An ultrawide combines a broad viewing area in one display. Two monitors create separate screens that can be arranged independently. For a sense of scale, LG UK compares a representative 34-inch ultrawide at 21:9 and 3440 × 1440 with a pair of 27-inch displays at 16:9 and 2560 × 1440 per screen. Those are examples, not specifications shared by every model. LG estimates the two 27-inch screens together add about 23.5 inches of width—roughly 15.5 inches more than the 34-inch ultrawide in its comparison. Connection counts are typical rather than universal; check the exact computer and display ports. A wider resolution or two simultaneous displays also needs to be supported by the computer’s graphics hardware and software.

Choose two monitors for separate, flexible screens
Dual monitors are a natural fit if you regularly keep one application on one screen and reference material, chat, or another app on the other. The physical separation can make that layout straightforward without needing to manage windows across a single broad desktop. Two screens can also be arranged side by side, stacked, in portrait orientation, or as a mixed-size pair, depending on the mounts and available space.

The trade-off is that two displays generally take more desk width and stand space. A compatible VESA dual arm can reduce the space taken by the original stands and give you more positioning options. Before buying one, verify that each monitor has a compatible VESA mount and that the arm supports its size and weight. MSI’s setup comparison discusses the placement and mount considerations.
Choose an ultrawide for a continuous panoramic workspace
An ultrawide has no center bezel, which can be useful when you want a broad, uninterrupted view—for example, when working with a wide timeline or several side-by-side windows. It commonly uses one display connection, though the precise ports depend on the model. The wide surface alone does not guarantee that your apps will arrange themselves as you want: check whether your operating system or monitor software provides window snapping or layout features that suit your workflow.

One stand and one display do not necessarily mean a smaller desk footprint. An ultrawide can be very wide, so check its actual dimensions against your desk. Also confirm the monitor’s resolution, aspect ratio, inputs, and support for the computer and applications you plan to use.

There is no universal productivity winner established by the available evidence. A 2021 study by Guy Amir, Ayala Prusak, Tal Reiss, Nir Zabari, and Dror G. Feitelson surveyed 101 practitioners; 80% had coded professionally for at least two years. The authors report that 19% of respondents added a monitor to their home setup in response to COVID-19. They write, “The results indicate that using multiple monitors is indeed perceived as beneficial and desirable.” That finding describes practitioners’ perceptions and work practices; the survey was not a controlled test proving that either monitor arrangement causes a productivity gain for everyone. Instead of choosing by an abstract productivity claim, consider the tasks you perform: whether you need persistent separation between applications, whether content often spans a wide area, and whether your software handles a broad desktop well.

- Desk fit: Compare each display’s width, height, stand depth, and planned position with your desk. For two monitors, account for the combined width; for an ultrawide, check that a single broad screen fits comfortably.
- Resolution and aspect ratio: Compare the exact specifications with your applications and the computer’s graphics support. The example configurations above are not a guarantee of what a particular product offers.
- Ports and cables: Check available video outputs on the computer and compatible inputs on every monitor. Include any required cables or adapters in the setup plan.
- Stand and mounting: Look at height and tilt adjustment, VESA compatibility, and—if using an arm—supported screen size and weight.
- Warranty and total cost: Compare the warranty and the full cost of the actual configurations, including a second monitor or optional mount and necessary accessories. Prices and availability vary by model and seller; a category comparison cannot establish which option is cheaper today.

A practical decision rule
- Pick dual monitors if keeping applications on distinct physical screens or changing their positions and orientations matters most, and your desk and computer can accommodate two displays.
- Pick an ultrawide if you value an uninterrupted wide surface and its dimensions, resolution, and software support fit your workspace.
- Compare exact configurations before deciding: measure the displays, confirm computer ports and graphics support, review stand or VESA options, and calculate the total cost of the setup you would actually buy.
