Dual-link DVI uses two TMDS links, while single-link DVI uses one. The extra link increases the signal path’s capacity, but the label alone does not guarantee that a particular computer, monitor, cable, or adapter will support a specific resolution or refresh rate.
What does dual-link mean on a DVI port?
DVI carries video using Transition-Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS). In a single-link connection, the signal uses one TMDS link; in dual-link DVI, it uses two. VESA’s certified-components directory distinguishes a receiver that supports “one dual-link DVI or two single links,” illustrating that dual-link is a configuration of the signal path, not simply a different connector shape. What does dual-link DVI support?
VESA stated on January 31, 2013, that the DVI standard limits TMDS clock rates to 165 MHz. That is a clock-rate ceiling, not a guarantee of a particular resolution or refresh rate. Actual display modes depend on the source, display, timing, and implementation, so check the specifications for both devices and the intervening cable or adapter rather than relying on the “dual-link” label alone. Can DisplayPort connect to a dual-link DVI display?
Yes, if the source, adapter, and display support the required connection. VESA explains that a Dual-Mode DisplayPort source can output TMDS for DVI, but an adapter is still needed to convert the connector and electrical signal for a DVI display. VESA’s Dual-Mode DisplayPort explanation
#1 Best Overall
- High performance DVI cable connects a DVI (Digital Video Interface) equipped computer to an HD monitor or projector with DVI-D Dual Link for video editing, gaming, or video projection
- Future-proof display configuration at home, in the office or conference room with more bandwidth than Single Link DVI cord. Supports resolutions up to 2560x1600 including 2560x1440, 1920x1200, and 1080p (Full HD)
- Engineered with molded strain relief connectors for durability, grip treads for easy plugging and unplugging, and finger-tightened screws for a secure connection
- The combination of gold-plated connectors, bare copper conductors, foil & braid shielding provides superior cable performance, static-free transmission, and noise suppression
- Supporting 120Hz refresh rate at up to 2560x1440 (1440p), this highly rated DVI wire is perfect for bandwidth-hungry gaming applications with Geforce GTX or AMD Radeon HD video cards
For a dual-link DVI display, look for an adapter that explicitly supports dual-link DVI; a generic DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter should not be assumed to do so. VESA’s certified-components directory lists active DisplayPort-to-DVI dual-link adapter products, but that listing does not establish compatibility with any particular computer, graphics card, monitor, resolution, or refresh rate. Check the product and device specifications for your exact combination. VESA certified-components directory
