“Dual input adapter” is not one standardized product. It describes a device with two input connections, but what those inputs are and how the device chooses between them depends on the product category. In electronics it usually refers to a power circuit that accepts two power sources. In consumer audio it can refer to a cable adapter with two connections. Identifying the device starts with knowing which of these contexts you are in.
Where the term appears
The datasheets, technical articles and product listings examined for this definition use the phrase in three main settings:
- Battery chargers with two power inputs, such as an adapter input and a USB input.
- Power-mux controllers that route power from a USB Type-C input or an auxiliary source.
- Car-audio and microphone/headphone adapters, sold as cables or wiring kits with two connections.
Two-input chargers: the SC820 example
The clearest technical definition comes from the Semtech SC820, a single-cell lithium-ion charger. Its datasheet, dated September 17, 2009 and hosted by IC Components, describes an adapter input and a USB input. According to that document, charging starts when a valid source is applied to either input, and the charger selects the adapter when both are present.

The datasheet states: “Charging begins automatically when a valid input source is applied to either input.” This is the SC820’s documented behavior. Other chargers labeled dual input may set different priorities, so the behavior should be read from each part’s own documentation.

The Maxim MAX77818 datasheet uses the same kind of dual-input terminology for power-path charging, which is why the phrase shows up across battery-charger literature.
Power-mux controllers
DigiKey’s technical article describes an optional dual-input power-mux controller that supports a USB Type-C input and an auxiliary power source. A power mux routes power from one of several sources to a load. The term “dual input” on its own does not say which source takes priority when both are connected. The article does not establish a universal selection rule, so that policy has to come from the specific controller’s documentation.

Consumer audio and wiring adapters
In consumer listings the phrase means something different. MT Audio Shop sells an adapter for car-audio power and connection wiring. Retail listings show how a product is used, not how the term is defined in electronics engineering.
Microphone and headphone adapters also carry the name. A reader on Reddit asked, “Can I connect this dual-input adapter to my PC?” in that context. The question shows how easily the label causes confusion. It is a reader’s question, not technical guidance, and the answer depends on the connector types and signal function printed in that adapter’s own specifications.

How to identify the device you have
- Find the model number or product name printed on the device or its packaging. A generic label such as “dual input adapter” is not enough to identify the part.
- Check each input connector and its type, such as USB Type-C, a barrel jack, or a car power lead.
- Locate the supported voltage and current ratings in the datasheet or manual. Do not assume ratings from the phrase itself.
- Determine whether the device selects one input, combines them, or routes power by priority.
- Read what the documentation says happens when both inputs are connected. If it says nothing, do not connect both inputs at once.
Once the model is known, the manufacturer’s datasheet or manual is the authoritative source for how the two inputs behave.
