Dual-booting Windows 11 and Ubuntu means choosing one operating system each time the laptop starts—not using both desktops at once. The practical difference is clearest before and during setup: Ubuntu can be previewed from a USB drive, but installing it alongside Windows requires disk-space decisions and may involve security or storage settings that vary by laptop.
There is no universal verdict on which system feels faster, lasts longer on battery, or works better with a particular laptop. Those answers depend on the model, configuration, and applications. The reliable way to assess your own machine is to try Ubuntu before installing it, then check any setup blockers before changing the disk.
What dual-booting changes day to day
Windows and Ubuntu share a laptop, but they do not share a running desktop session. At startup, you choose which operating system to enter. To move from one to the other, you restart and make the other choice. Your files and applications do not automatically become one shared environment just because both systems are installed.
That makes the experience less about a single combined interface and more about keeping two separate workspaces available. Whether that trade-off suits you depends on the applications and devices you rely on, as well as how smoothly Ubuntu runs on your exact laptop.

Try Ubuntu before changing the laptop
Ubuntu’s installer includes a Try Ubuntu option. It previews the desktop without changing the PC, and Canonical recommends using it to check whether hardware works. Start here if you want to learn how Ubuntu behaves on your machine without committing to an installation. See Canonical’s Ubuntu 24.04 desktop installation guide for the documented flow.
Use the live session to check the specific things that matter to you: connect to Wi-Fi, try the touchpad and function keys, adjust display brightness, connect an external monitor if you use one, and test any essential peripherals or applications that can run in the preview. A successful check is useful evidence about that session, not a guarantee about every driver, future update, suspend-and-wake behavior, or installed application.
The available documentation does not provide a measured Windows-versus-Ubuntu comparison for any named laptop. It therefore cannot establish which system will have better battery life, graphics performance, sleep behavior, gaming compatibility, or speed on your device. Treat those as questions to test on your model rather than universal properties of either operating system.

What installation involves
Prepare a bootable USB drive
Canonical’s guide calls for bootable USB installation media and warns that writing the Ubuntu image erases the USB stick’s contents. Use a USB drive whose contents you have saved or do not need, and back up important files before making disk changes. The guide estimates that writing the image with Rufus usually takes around 10 minutes; that is a preparation estimate for that tool, not a total installation-time estimate.
Boot the installer and check the disk options
Start the laptop from the USB drive, then use the live preview before choosing whether to install. The installer supports an alongside-Windows path and lets you choose the drive and the amount of space for Ubuntu. The available space depends in part on the space already occupied by files on the disk, so review the proposed allocation rather than assuming the installer can use any amount you want.
Canonical describes manual partitioning as intended for advanced users who need a specific configuration. If your goal is simply to keep Windows and add Ubuntu, do not treat manual partitioning as the default route unless you understand the partition layout and consequences.

Check for storage configuration issues
Some PCs use Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST), which Ubuntu’s installation guide says is not supported without disabling RST. If the installer cannot proceed because of the storage configuration, check the exact laptop and Windows setup before changing firmware or storage settings. A change made without understanding its effect can make an existing installation inaccessible.

BitLocker is an important blocker to check before attempting an alongside install. Canonical says the installer cannot correctly map encrypted Windows storage for a safe installation alongside Windows; encrypted content appears inaccessible to it. Its documentation describes disabling BitLocker or using a separate, unencrypted disk as alternatives. Read the BitLocker installation guidance and the relevant instructions for your Windows version before deciding what to do.
Do not turn off disk protection casually. Canonical warns that some Windows versions may not let you re-enable BitLocker after it has been disabled. Check that you have the recovery information you may need, understand the consequences for your device, and confirm the procedure for your specific Windows edition. The available sources do not establish one safe, universal BitLocker procedure for every laptop.

Secure Boot usually does not mean Ubuntu cannot start
Secure Boot is part of Windows 11’s protected startup path, but its presence does not by itself mean Ubuntu cannot boot. Microsoft describes Secure Boot and Trusted Boot as protections for startup; Canonical documents Ubuntu’s signed boot chain, in which a Microsoft-signed shim validates Canonical-signed GRUB and kernel components. See Microsoft’s Secure Boot and Trusted Boot overview and Canonical’s Ubuntu Secure Boot documentation.
One exception can arise with some third-party kernel modules. Ubuntu may require signing and Machine Owner Key (MOK) enrollment, which can add a confirmation step on reboot when a driver or module is installed. Canonical also documents automatic key handling for typical Ubuntu use. This is a reason to understand a particular driver prompt—not a reason to assume every dual boot requires switching Secure Boot off.

Which details depend on your laptop
The installation path is documented, but day-to-day compatibility is model-specific. Before relying on Ubuntu as your main environment, assess the components and workflows you actually use. The Try Ubuntu session is a practical first check; additional testing after installation may still be needed for behavior that a live session cannot establish.
- Hardware: Wi-Fi, graphics, touchpad, keyboard shortcuts and function keys, brightness controls, external displays, and peripherals.
- Power and startup: suspend and wake behavior, battery drain, boot selection, and firmware or driver prompts.
- Work and entertainment: access to required applications, games, and any specialized devices or software.
- Shared files: how you will move or access files between separate operating-system sessions.
- Updates: how each system’s updates and restarts fit your routine, and whether any device-specific firmware or driver work is needed.
These are checks to make on your own machine, not results established for every Windows 11 and Ubuntu dual boot. Ubuntu’s installer can optionally use an internet connection to download updates and third-party drivers, including NVIDIA graphics drivers; the connection is not required for installation according to Canonical’s guide.
A practical decision path
- Back up important data and locate any Windows recovery information before changing partitions or security settings.
- Create the Ubuntu USB installer, remembering that writing the image erases the USB drive.
- Boot into Try Ubuntu and check the hardware and workflows you depend on.
- Confirm the disk setup: check whether Windows storage is BitLocker-encrypted, whether the laptop uses Intel RST, and whether the installer offers an alongside option with enough space.
- Proceed only when you understand the proposed disk changes and any security trade-offs for your exact Windows version and laptop.
If any of those checks raises an unresolved concern, pause before modifying the disk. The value of dual-booting is having two separate operating systems available; it is not worth risking data or an unbootable Windows installation to get there without understanding the device-specific steps.
