DSP Concepts announced Audio Weaver support for Cadence’s Tensilica HiFi 5 DSP in April 2021. The platform gives audio teams a graphical way to assemble and tune signal-processing modules for products such as headsets, wearables, wireless devices and automotive systems. The announcement planned general release for the end of Q2 2021; the available announcement does not confirm when that release occurred.

What Audio Weaver does

Audio Weaver is DSP Concepts’ graphical platform for developing embedded audio. Rather than building an audio product’s signal chain entirely from low-level DSP code, teams can assemble reusable processing modules, adjust them and test the design. Cadence describes the workflow as drag-and-drop, with real-time tuning and debugging.

The platform is intended for audio product development, including voice interfaces, playback and AI-enabled audio. Its lower-level building blocks include beamformers, echo cancellers, noise reduction and speaker equalization, according to DSP Concepts founder and CTO Paul Beckmann. That breadth matters because a product can need several kinds of processing in one signal chain, not just a speech-recognition model.

What HiFi 5 support means for developers

HiFi 5 is a Cadence Tensilica DSP core positioned for demanding audio workloads in power-constrained devices, including voice recognition and AI audio. Audio Weaver support provides a development path for mapping audio-processing designs to that target; it does not, by itself, establish that every module, algorithm or product configuration is supported on every HiFi 5 implementation.

The original April 2021 announcement focused on low-power wireless products, headsets, wearables and high-end automotive systems. Actual feasibility depends on the target’s available compute, memory and power budget, as well as the codecs and algorithms the product needs. The announcement does not publish HiFi 5 utilization figures or a supported-algorithm matrix, so those details must be checked for the specific design.

How the Audio Weaver workflow differs from hand-coded DSP development

A 2016 joint Cadence and DSP Concepts announcement said Audio Weaver could make development “up to 10X faster,” attributing the claim to parallel development and reuse of pre-built, optimized audio modules. Treat that as a vendor-attributed maximum, not a guaranteed schedule improvement or an independently established result for every project. The same material said the graphical core design activity could be performed without writing DSP code or invoking a compiler, while retaining real-time tuning and regression testing.

Development dimension Audio Weaver approach What to establish for a project
First prototype Build a signal chain from graphical modules instead of starting with an entirely hand-coded design. How much of the required chain is available as optimized modules, and what integration work remains.
Reuse Reusable audio modules can support parallel development and are the basis of the 2016 “up to 10X faster” claim. Whether the required modules are licensed, supported and suitable for the exact HiFi 5 target.
Tuning and debugging Cadence describes real-time tuning and debugging; the 2016 material also mentions regression testing. How the workflow fits the product’s test setup and release process.
Implementation control The core graphical design activity was described as possible without DSP code or a compiler. Whether custom code or target-specific optimization is needed beyond that core activity.
Multicore mapping Cadence later described automotive and true-wireless-stereo applications mapping efficiently to cache-coherent HiFi 5s SMP. How the selected design’s processing and memory demands scale across the specific implementation’s cores.

The comparison is about workflow, not a claim that graphical development removes engineering trade-offs. Teams still need to validate performance, power, memory use, latency and sound quality on their target hardware.

Can it handle voice AI, beamforming and echo cancellation?

The platform is aimed at voice and AI-enabled audio, and the cited DSP Concepts material specifically identifies beamformers and echo cancellers among its building blocks. It also names noise reduction and speaker equalization. This supports the use cases in the announcement, but it does not prove that a particular recognition model or third-party algorithm is included, or that a complete voice pipeline will fit a given HiFi 5 design.

For a product decision, confirm the exact module and algorithm availability with DSP Concepts and verify the complete chain on the intended hardware. Voice recognition and AI processing compete for finite compute and memory alongside capture, playback and other real-time audio tasks; the announcement gives no benchmark or configuration-specific resource budget.

Is there a HiFi 5 true-wireless-stereo reference design?

Yes. In March 2022, DSP Concepts announced a TWS Toolkit with a reference design optimized for the HiFi 5 DSP, developed in partnership with Airoha. The toolkit included DSP Concepts blocks as well as partner algorithms from Mimi Hearing Technologies and VisiSonics. This establishes an announced HiFi 5-oriented TWS design, not universal compatibility with every TWS chipset or proof that the toolkit remains available in the same form today.

Cadence later described automotive and TWS applications using Audio Weaver as mapping efficiently to the cache-coherent HiFi 5s SMP. It said hardware cache coherency was intended to simplify multicore development. That is a platform-level benefit, not a substitute for checking workload placement and resource use on the target implementation.

How the 2021 enablement fits the newer Cadence lineup

Cadence’s January 2026 HiFi iQ announcement provides a newer-generation reference point, not an updated specification for HiFi 5. Cadence claimed HiFi iQ offers 2× greater compute performance, 8× higher AI performance and more than 25% energy savings versus HiFi 5s. Those are Cadence’s comparative claims for HiFi iQ; they should not be read as performance figures for the original HiFi 5 or as evidence that an existing HiFi 5 design automatically transfers to HiFi iQ.
