To connect to a Bambu Lab printer over MQTT on your local network, point an MQTT client at the printer’s IP address on port 8883 with TLS enabled, sign in as bblp with the printer’s LAN access code as the password, subscribe to device/{DEVICE_ID}/report, and publish JSON commands to device/{DEVICE_ID}/request. This is the local setup described in the community-maintained OpenBambuAPI reference. Bambu Lab does not officially support this interface, and a community protocol capture reports that newer firmware expects certificate-signed commands. A successful connection therefore does not prove that control commands will be accepted.

What you need before you start

  • A printer on the same local network as your client, with a known IP address. The mqtt-bambu bridge project suggests a DHCP reservation so the address does not change after a restart.
  • The printer’s LAN access code and serial number, which you read from the printer’s own network screen. The serial number is the {DEVICE_ID} segment of every topic.
  • An MQTT client that supports TLS and can accept the printer’s self-signed certificate. The bridge documentation describes exactly this certificate arrangement for direct LAN access.
  • A written record of your firmware version and Developer Mode state. Behavior varies by model and firmware, so you will need both when troubleshooting.

Connection settings

The OpenBambuAPI reference documents the following local broker settings. Although the reference writes the address as mqtt://{PRINTER_IP}:8883, the connection itself must use TLS, so choose the TLS or SSL transport option in your client rather than plain MQTT.

Setting Value Notes
Host The printer’s IP address A DHCP reservation keeps it stable.
Port 8883 The MQTT broker port documented for local access.
Transport TLS Plain, unencrypted MQTT is not the documented path.
Username bblp Fixed local username in the reference.
Password LAN access code Taken from the printer, not from your Bambu account.
Subscribe device/{DEVICE_ID}/report Printer messages and command responses.
Publish device/{DEVICE_ID}/request Where command JSON is sent.

Handling the self-signed certificate

Because the printer presents its own certificate, the simplest client configuration is to disable certificate verification. That removes the protection TLS is supposed to provide on your network. A safer approach is to export the printer’s certificate and tell your client to trust that specific certificate. Disable verification only as a temporary test on a network you control.

Topics and message format

The report topic

Messages on device/{DEVICE_ID}/report carry device information, status, and responses to your commands. Every message is JSON.

The request topic

Commands go to device/{DEVICE_ID}/request. Each request is grouped under a type key such as info or system, and contains a sequence_id and a command field. Give every request a unique sequence identifier so you can match replies to the requests that produced them.

Matching responses to requests

  1. Generate a unique sequence_id for each request and store it with the request.
  2. Watch the report topic for a message carrying the same identifier.
  3. Read the result field. If it is not successful, read the reason field for the printer’s explanation.
  4. Treat a request with no matching reply as unconfirmed, not as completed.

Reading status: deltas, snapshots and pushall

Status messages are not always complete. Understanding this is the difference between a dashboard that stays accurate and one that quietly shows stale values.

  • Made for Everyday Creativity: From toys and home décor to functional tools and personalized gifts, A1 mini makes it easy to turn ideas into real-life creations with a seamless and enjoyable printing experience.
  • Reports can be partial. The OpenBambuAPI reference says P1-series printers may send only the values that changed.
  • Merge, do not replace. Keep a state object on your side and overwrite only the fields that arrive in each message. The mqtt-bambu bridge works this way.
  • Request a full snapshot with pushall. The reference documents this command for a complete status report.
  • Limit how often you request it. The reference cautions against sending pushall to a P1P more often than every five minutes, because frequent requests may cause lag.
  • Refresh periodically. The mqtt-bambu bridge merges deltas and asks for snapshots on a timer, which is a good pattern to copy so that missed deltas are corrected.

Choosing between cloud and direct LAN

The mqtt-bambu bridge documents two ways to reach a printer: through Bambu’s cloud MQTT broker or directly over the printer’s own LAN broker. It then publishes normalized status to a separate home MQTT broker, which is a useful architecture if other systems need the data.

Approach Connection path Credentials and dependencies Main trade-off
Cloud MQTT Bambu’s cloud broker Account identity and token; the bridge handles account login and session handling Depends on your Bambu account and the cloud service
Direct LAN MQTT The printer’s own broker Local IP address, serial number, and LAN access code; TLS with the printer’s self-signed certificate Needs local network reachability. The bridge documentation says LAN Only printers are no longer reachable through the cloud broker.

These comparisons reflect the bridge project’s documented behavior and should not be assumed for other clients.

Firmware, Developer Mode and the vendor’s position

Standard Mode and Developer Mode

Bambu Lab’s January 20, 2025 announcement describes two modes. Standard Mode is the default. Developer Mode is optional and is named for the X1, P1, A1 and A1 Mini. When a user turns it on manually, MQTT, the live camera stream and FTP can be left open. The announcement says users who enable it are responsible for securing their local network, and that the protocols are not officially supported. It adds:

“Please note that Bambu Lab will not be able to provide customer support for this mode, as the communication protocols are not officially supported.”

LAN mode through Bambu Connect

The same announcement describes LAN mode through Bambu Connect as requiring neither internet access nor an account. Confirm how your printer’s current settings and firmware behave before relying on this, because the announcement describes design intent at the time it was published.

Keep the broker on your local network

  • Do not forward port 8883 or any other printer port through your router.
  • Place the printer on a network segment that only trusted devices can reach.
  • Use a strong, unique LAN access code and change it if you suspect it has leaked, if your printer’s settings allow it.

Signed commands on newer firmware

A community protocol capture, based on Bambu Handy v3.x communicating with a P1S, reports that firmware released after January 2025 requires X.509 certificate authentication and uses signed command payloads. This is an observed behavior from one capture, not an official compatibility matrix, and it does not establish that every model or firmware uses the same flow.

Treat signing as a version-dependent requirement. Read the status path first, since it usually works without signing, and confirm your firmware before you build any control workflow that depends on commands being accepted.

Troubleshooting

  • Connection refused or times out. Confirm the printer is powered on, the IP address is current, port 8883 is the target, and your client uses TLS.
  • Authentication fails. Use the username bblp and re-read the LAN access code from the printer’s own screen. Do not use your Bambu account password.
  • Connects but receives nothing. Check that the serial number in your topic path matches the printer exactly.
  • Certificate error. Export and trust the printer’s certificate rather than leaving verification disabled.
  • Command sent, no matching reply. Confirm the sequence_id is unique and that you are watching the report topic. On newer firmware, check whether the command must be signed.
  • Reply reports a failure. Read the reason field before retrying.
  • Values look frozen. Your state object may be missing deltas. Request a pushall, but no more often than every five minutes on a P1P.

Record the model, firmware version and Developer Mode state with every issue you report, since those determine which behavior applies.

The Bottom Line

Start with read-only status over the local network, where the documented connection path is most established. Add control commands only after you have confirmed they are accepted on your exact model and firmware.
