Neither host is a proven overall winner. DreamHost offers both lower-cost WordPress hosting and its managed DreamPress service; WP Engine focuses on managed WordPress hosting. Choose by comparing the specific plan’s full cost over the same term with the sites, storage, traffic allowance, backups, migration help, staging, and support you need. The providers’ published pages do not establish which host is faster or more reliable in independent head-to-head testing.

What DreamHost’s plans include
Standard WordPress Hosting
DreamHost lists three WordPress Hosting plans with monthly prices that apply to a four-year promotional term. The provider says the full term, plus applicable taxes, is charged at checkout.

#1 Best Overall
Managed DreamPress
DreamPress has a separate price and feature structure; it should not be treated as interchangeable with the standard WordPress Hosting plans. DreamPress 1 is listed at $14.99/month for the first year, renewing at $19.99/month. Its listed allowance is one site, 15 GB NVMe storage, 40,000 monthly visits, 14-day backup retention, and one professional migration.
DreamHost lists higher DreamPress tiers with greater site, storage, visitor, and migration allowances. Its comparison shows 14-day backup retention on smaller tiers and 30 days on larger listed tiers. DreamHost describes DreamPress features including on-demand and locked backups, one-click staging, CDN, failover protection, and 24/7 WordPress expert support. Check the selected tier’s plan card to establish which allowances and features apply.

What WP Engine’s plans include
WP Engine’s small-business pricing page lists these starting prices: Startup at $30/month, Professional at $55/month, Growth at $109/month, Scale at $276/month, and Core Hosting at $400/month. The figures are provider-listed starting prices; the page information available here does not establish a matched billing term or the complete checkout cost for each plan.

These are provider-listed features, not independent findings about performance or security outcomes. Verify current plan-specific limits and checkout pricing before deciding.
Rank #3
WP Engine describes its support as a dedicated technical team available 24/7 for performance, security, and uptime. That is the company’s service description, not a measured comparison with DreamHost.
How to compare the real cost
Do not compare a promotional monthly equivalent with another provider’s starting price as if both covered the same term. DreamHost’s standard WordPress prices above are monthly equivalents for a four-year promotional term, with the full term charged at checkout. DreamPress 1’s listed price applies to its first year. WP Engine’s page gives starting prices, without enough information here to establish a directly comparable billing commitment.
Rank #4
For each plan you are considering, compare the amount due now and the cost across one shared time horizon. Include the renewal price, applicable taxes, and extras you will actually need. For DreamHost, account for email charges after the first three months if you need email hosting. A low introductory equivalent may not remain the low-cost choice after renewal.

Match the plan to your sites and workload
Count sites, storage, and expected visits
Start with the number of websites you will host, their current storage use, and expected monthly traffic. DreamHost publishes numerical allowances for its standard WordPress plans and DreamPress 1. The available WP Engine pricing-page details do not provide comparable plan-by-plan capacity figures, so a numerical capacity winner cannot be identified from these pages. Check each provider’s live plan specifications against your own requirements.
Best Value
Decide how much managed WordPress support you need
DreamHost offers both standard WordPress hosting and managed DreamPress, while WP Engine’s listed lineup is managed WordPress hosting. If staging, backup controls, migration help, plugin risk scans, or WordPress-focused support would reduce work for your team, verify that the exact plan includes the features you need and weigh that against its full cost. A managed label alone does not show which provider will require less work for your particular site.
Check backup recovery and migration details
Look beyond whether a plan says it includes backups. Compare retention, whether backups are daily or can also be made on demand, available restore options, and whether migration assistance is included on the tier you plan to buy. DreamPress 1 lists 14-day retention and one professional migration; DreamPress retention varies by tier. WP Engine lists daily and on-demand backups, but the cited pricing information does not state retention periods. Do not assume that an unstated detail is the same between providers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does DreamHost or WP Engine perform better?
The provider pages describe features such as caching, CDN, and failover protection, but those descriptions do not prove a comparative speed or uptime result. No independent, controlled head-to-head performance test is established by the cited material. If measured performance is decisive, seek comparable tests for the specific plans and site configurations you are evaluating rather than treating marketing descriptions as a benchmark.

- Consider DreamHost WordPress Hosting if its published site, storage, and visit allowances fit your needs and the four-year upfront commitment and renewal price suit your budget.
- Consider DreamPress if you want DreamHost’s managed WordPress offering and a selected tier’s migration, backup, staging, and support provisions justify its cost for your workload.
- Consider WP Engine if its managed WordPress feature set and support model fit your operational needs and its current plan limits and total price work for you.
- Do not choose solely on a speed or reliability claim based on these provider pages; they do not establish an independent winner on either measure.
