DreamHost’s self-managed VPS is a Linux server with full root access for people who are willing to build, maintain and secure that server themselves. If you want DreamHost to handle server software updates, security patches and daily backups, the product you need is Managed VPS, which is a separate plan family without root or sudo access.
This review is based on DreamHost’s published product pages, knowledge base articles and policies as they read at the time of writing. It does not include independent benchmarks, uptime measurements or tests of DreamHost’s support team, so the performance and service questions below are answered only as far as the provider’s own documentation goes.
What the self-managed VPS includes
DreamHost’s VPS product page lists the core features: AMD EPYC CPUs, NVMe storage, full root access, a choice of Linux operating system, Docker and KVM support, an app library, DDoS protection, 24/7 support and unmetered bandwidth. The DreamHost VPS overview describes the product as direct control of the Linux environment for running custom applications and workloads.

Self-managed Stack plans
The current self-managed plans and their advertised prices are shown below. The introductory monthly price applies to the first three months; the renewal price applies after that. The page states that the full term plus taxes is charged at checkout, so confirm the exact amount on the checkout screen before you buy, because promotional prices can change.
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | NVMe storage | Intro price (first 3 months) | Renewal price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stack 4 | 2 | 4 GB | 75 GB | $8.99/month | $15.99/month |
| Stack 8 | 2 | 8 GB | 150 GB | $13.99/month | $21.99/month |
| Stack 16 | 4 | 16 GB | 250 GB | $22.99/month | $34.99/month |
| Stack 32 | 8 | 32 GB | 450 GB | $45.99/month | $59.99/month |
Because the introductory rate covers only three months, the figure that matters for a long-running server is the renewal price. A Stack 8 server, for example, costs $13.99 a month for the first quarter and $21.99 a month after that.
Who is responsible for what
The division of responsibility is the most important part of this product. DreamHost’s VPS documentation says the customer configures, maintains and secures the server environment, while DreamHost maintains the underlying hardware and network. DreamHost’s 24/7 support is described on the product page as covering hardware, network and connectivity.

- Applying security patches and configuring the firewall and SSH access
- Setting up, testing and storing backups; the unmanaged plan does not include server-managed backups
- Configuring the application stack, databases and any web server

Infrastructure support should not be read as DreamHost taking over the server software, application stack, backups or security configuration. Those remain with the account holder.

What “unmetered bandwidth” means
DreamHost advertises unmetered bandwidth and says there are no standard transfer overage fees on VPS plans. Its resource allocation policy states that VPS, Managed VPS and Dedicated Server plans have no monthly visitor thresholds, and that bandwidth is unmetered for billing purposes.
The same policy says bandwidth may be temporarily limited in rare cases to protect infrastructure stability. Unmetered billing also does not mean unlimited CPU, RAM or storage, and it does not promise a guaranteed throughput figure. Each Stack plan has a fixed allocation of vCPU, memory and NVMe storage, and a workload that exceeds those limits will need a larger plan.

- Operating system or app image: According to DreamHost’s setup documentation, the selected base OS or app image cannot be changed after launch without reprovisioning the server.
- Credentials: You choose the root password and SSH settings during provisioning. DreamHost does not store them, so save them in a password manager or another secure location.
- Lost access: Per the setup documentation, losing the SSH key or root password requires provisioning a new server.
- Authentication method: DreamHost recommends SSH-key authentication over passwords. Its guide to configuring and connecting to a VPS covers the connection steps.
Refunds, backups and support boundaries
The self-managed VPS has no 30-day money-back guarantee, according to DreamHost’s VPS overview. Backups are the customer’s responsibility, and the unmanaged plan does not include server management or application-level support. If you move a site or service from Managed VPS to the self-managed plan, you must rebuild the management tasks yourself; the Managed features do not carry over.
DreamHost’s hosting plan FAQs cover the general plan questions. Read the VPS overview alongside them before you commit, because the refund and backup terms differ between the two product families.
Who should choose the self-managed VPS
The self-managed plan fits best when the following are true:
- You are comfortable with Linux administration, including package management, firewalls, SSH hardening and service configuration.
- You need root access to install custom software, run Docker containers or configure the stack in ways a managed environment would not allow.
- You have a backup plan that you will run and test yourself.
- Your workload fits within a fixed allocation of CPU, RAM and NVMe storage, and you have accounted for the renewal price after the three-month introductory period.
It is a poor fit if you want someone else to patch the server, monitor it and take care of backups, or if you need application-level help. In those cases the Managed VPS plans are the relevant option, with the trade-off that you give up root access.
Verdict on the product as published
DreamHost’s self-managed VPS offers a Linux root environment on a published price list, with the infrastructure and network handled by DreamHost and everything above that layer handled by you. Whether it is worth the money depends on whether you have the skills and time to run the server. The published terms do not show whether its performance, uptime or support quality will meet your needs, so verify those with a trial of your own workload before you rely on it.
