Yes. MediBang Paint runs on both Android phones and iPhones as a free app for drawing and making comics, with tools for sketching, inking, panel layout, tones, lettering, and image export. What you need depends mostly on your phone’s operating system version, and the comic-specific tools work differently from a desktop program, so it helps to know the full workflow before you start.
What the phone apps can do
MediBang describes its Android and iPhone apps as free digital painting and comic creation tools. The Android product page says the app is “a FREE digital painting and comic creation app for Android tablets and smartphones,” and the iPhone product page uses the same description for iPhones. Both versions list layers, manga-style guides, panel creation, text, tones and materials, multipage project management, and file export.
Requirements for Android and iPhone
The two apps have different system requirements, so check the one that matches your phone before you install. The figures below are the ones printed on MediBang’s official product pages when this article was prepared. Store listings change, so confirm them in the app store before downloading.

A beginner workflow for a phone comic page
MediBang’s official Android and iPhone tutorials cover the same core tasks: drawing, saving, layers, manga draft guides, panel splitting, text, tones, and PNG or JPG export. The sequence below follows that order. It is a practical plan for a first page, not a tested walkthrough, and button names may differ slightly between the two platforms and between app versions.

- Create a new canvas sized for your page. Choose the project type from the new-file screen and keep the page as a multipage project if you plan more than one page.
- Sketch on its own layer. Rough out figures and layout on a draft layer, so you can hide or delete it later without losing your inking.
- Ink on a separate layer above the sketch. Use the brush settings for clean lines and keep the ink layer separate from any colour or tone work.
- Turn on the comic guides and divide the panels. The Android tutorial covers manga manuscript guides and panel cutting; the iPhone tutorial covers manga draft lines and panel splitting. Set your frames before you draw the final art inside them.
- Add tones or materials for shading and backgrounds. Tones and materials are listed on both platforms; some of the material libraries are delivered through the cloud, as described below.
- Add speech bubbles and text with the text tool. The iPhone text tutorial describes the text-tool controls and how cloud fonts are used.
- Save the editable project in MDP, the app’s native format, so your layers, panels, and text stay editable.
- Export a PNG or JPG for posting or printing. Use PSD if you need to continue in another editor.
Saving, exporting, and what a flattened image loses
Keep two copies of your work. The MDP file is the one to edit, because it keeps the project as you built it. A PNG or JPG is a finished image for sharing, and it is the format most people can open on any device. Once you export a flat image, you should not expect the layers, the panel structure as separate objects, or the editable text to survive. If you need to continue work in another program, export PSD instead and check that the layers open as expected before you rely on that file.
Cloud features versus local work
You can draw, save, and export on the phone without signing in to cloud services. Cloud features, however, need an account and an internet connection. According to MediBang’s cloud overview, the account lets you reach saved artwork and comics across devices, sync brushes and settings, access fonts and materials, and work with comic projects. If you are not using sync, keep a local MDP or PNG copy on the phone and make sure you can open the export elsewhere.

Stylus use is optional
You do not need a stylus to use the app. The tutorials show the basic drawing workflow without requiring pen input. If you want one, MediBang names Adonit Pixel among the stylus products supported by the iPhone app. That is MediBang’s own compatibility statement. It does not confirm that the product is still sold or that it works with every current iPhone, so check the stylus maker’s current compatibility notes before you buy.
Why the desktop comic guide is not a phone guide
MediBang also publishes a detailed “Creating Comics” guide written for the PC version. It covers comic canvas guides, panel division, materials, and text well, but its menu names and steps are written for desktop. Use it for comic-making principles, and use the Android or iPhone tutorial for the actual taps and menus on a phone.

Practical limits to plan around
- Screen size is the main constraint. Lettering and fine inking are easier to check if you zoom in, and it is worth proofreading text at full export size.
- Cloud fonts and materials need a connection; plan offline work with fonts and tones you have already downloaded.
- Keep both MDP and PNG or JPG versions of each page, so a finished image never replaces your editable project.
The Bottom Line
MediBang Paint is a workable choice for drawing and laying out comic pages on either Android or iPhone, provided your phone meets the minimum operating system listed for its platform. Set up your panels early, keep the MDP file as your master, and treat cloud sync as an optional extra rather than a requirement.
