DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition remains an inviting, substantial turn-based RPG, and its Switch 2 release adds a choice between higher resolution and smoother motion. It is an easy entry point for newcomers; for players who already own the Switch edition, the case is weaker: Square Enix says the story and game content are the same, Switch saves do not transfer, and this is a separate release.
What kind of RPG is Dragon Quest XI S?
You play as the Luminary, a young hero whose journey with a growing party takes him across the world to confront a threat to it. The adventure uses traditional turn-based battles: choose actions for party members, make use of their abilities, and adjust battle speed to suit your pace. Nintendo describes the game as an adventure that can occupy over 100 hours; that is publisher product copy, not a measured estimate of how long every player will take.
The game’s classic structure is a strength for players who enjoy a clear quest, a colorful cast and a large world to explore. Nintendo Life’s 2026 review characterizes the series entry as one of the strongest modern examples of classic JRPG design. What does the Definitive Edition include?
This release includes the Definitive Edition content rather than a new story. Its features include the option to play in 3D or in a retro-inspired 2D presentation, additional character-specific story chapters, Japanese voices and additional English voice content, and an orchestral score. Nintendo’s original Switch listing also describes side quests that revisit past Dragon Quest worlds, and Square Enix says the Switch 2 release includes the Definitive Edition features. What is different about the Switch 2 version?
Square Enix lists two graphics modes for Switch 2. They are official targets, not independently measured performance results.

Can you play it on the original Switch or transfer a save?
No on both counts. Nintendo UK identifies this product as a Nintendo Switch 2 game and says it cannot be played on Nintendo Switch. Square Enix also says save data from the Switch version cannot transfer to the Switch 2 retail version. If you have a long-running save, assume you would need to start again rather than continue it on the new release. Check the console and version carefully before purchase. Is Dragon Quest XI S worth buying on Switch 2?
For newcomers
Yes, if you want a substantial, traditional JRPG and own a Switch 2. Square Enix says prior experience with this game or the Dragon Quest series is not required. You get the complete Definitive Edition package and can choose the mode that prioritizes resolution or frame rate.

For owners of the Switch edition
It is harder to recommend as an upgrade. The content is the same, your Switch save will not carry over, and the new edition is sold separately. Nintendo Life praised the Switch 2 edition while questioning its value for people who already own the earlier version. At release, that review listed $39.99 for North America and £34.99 for the UK/Europe; those are region-specific launch prices and may no longer be current. For players choosing between the two editions
The practical choice depends on the console you own, whether you need to preserve an existing save, how much the Switch 2 graphics options matter to you, and the current local price. If you do not own the game yet, the Switch 2 release is the relevant version for a Switch 2 player; if you only have an original Switch, choose the Switch edition. The earlier version was praised for its story, characters, overworld, music and breadth, while Nintendo Life noted performance issues on that version.
