In Dragon Ball Legends, team building starts with checking which characters receive a party member’s Z Ability. Build around a battle core with overlapping Tags or Episodes, then use the remaining party slots for abilities and matchup coverage that help that core. A “bench unit” is a character in the party who is not among the three selected to fight; the term is player shorthand, not a separate game mode or character type.
What is a Z Ability?
A Z Ability is a character’s party effect, but it does not necessarily benefit every ally. Each ability has its own target conditions, such as a particular Tag or Episode, and may raise a specified stat or provide another listed effect. Bandai Namco describes Z Abilities as affecting specific kinds of characters in a party; check the individual character’s Ability tab rather than assuming an effect is universal (beginner notice, May 13, 2026).
In Party Formation, the game’s visual indicator can help show which characters are receiving Z or Zenkai Abilities. The number displayed at the bottom of a character icon indicates how many such abilities apply to that character. Treat the number as a quick check, not a verdict on team strength: inspect the effects themselves to see what is being boosted.

How do Tags and Episodes create team overlap?
Tags and Episodes are labels on characters that help determine whether they meet a Z Ability’s target conditions. Bandai Namco’s party-formation FAQ recommends building around Z Abilities and choosing characters with shared Tags or Episodes so more of the relevant effects can apply (official party-formation FAQ).

To check a potential match, open Character Details and review the character’s Tags, Episode, and Ability tab. You can also use the Party Formation filter to find characters with a target Tag or Episode. Matching labels are a starting point: confirm that the ability’s target and actual effect fit the characters you intend to use.
What is a bench unit?
The official battle overview describes choosing three characters for battle from a party of six (Bandai Namco battle overview). Players commonly call party members outside those three selections the “bench.” The phrase is community shorthand; the useful distinction is between the full party and the characters chosen to fight in a particular battle.

A character on the bench may still matter to team construction when its party ability applies to your battle selections. Evaluate the character by the effect it contributes to the intended core, not by rarity, power level, or popularity alone. A different party member may provide more relevant targets or effects.
What does team synergy mean?
Synergy is how well the party’s effects and battle choices work together. Shared Tags or Episodes can make more Z Abilities applicable, while character roles and element matchups affect whether the battle selections can cover different situations. A high on-screen ability count can be useful, but it does not by itself establish that the team is effective; the reviewed official guidance provides no universal formula for weighing every ability, role, and matchup.

A 2021 official strategy feature illustrates both kinds of consideration: it discusses SS4 Gogeta’s Tag targets and gives YEL Vegito as coverage for a GRN SS4 Gogeta facing an unfavorable element matchup (DRAGON BALL Official Site strategy feature). That is an example of how targets and elements can interact, not a current team recommendation.
How to build and check a party
- Choose your battle core. Decide which characters you want among the three selected for battle, and note any Tags or Episodes they share.
- Inspect their details. Open each candidate’s Character Details and check its Tags, Episode, and Ability tab to identify the conditions and effects of its Z Ability.
- Find possible matches. In Party Formation, use the filter for a Tag or Episode that matters to your core. Bandai Namco describes the filter and character details as tools for forming a party around Z Abilities (official party-formation FAQ).
- Check who actually receives each effect. Use the party indicator as a quick guide, then verify each ability’s target and effect. Do not count an ability as useful to a character that does not meet its conditions.
- Use the remaining slots deliberately. Consider characters whose abilities help the core, then assess whether the battle selections have useful element coverage and complementary roles.
- Compare substitutes by contribution. For two candidates competing for a slot, compare their target Tags or Episodes, what they boost and at which ability level, their element coverage, and whether they are intended to fight or mainly support the other party members.
- Recheck new or changed characters in-game. Character ability details can vary by ability level, and notices may be provisional. Use the current in-game details before relying on a named character’s targets.
Why ability level and date matter
A Z Ability’s targets may expand at higher levels, so a character’s name alone is not enough to establish which allies it supports. In the official 2021 SS4 Gogeta example, the Z Ability targets GT, adds Fusion Warrior at ★3, and adds Saiyan at ★6. Those thresholds illustrate why ability level belongs alongside the target when comparing characters; they are not a current recommendation.

- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

A more recent illustration is 1st Form Frieza: Dodoria & Zarbon (Assist). In its notice dated 2026-09-22 UTC, Z Ability II targets Lineage of Evil, Powerful Opponent, and Frieza Force; Z Ability III also adds a Strike Defense effect for Lineage of Evil. The notice says the details are under development and directs players to check in-game after the character is added (official ability notice). For a newly released or updated character, the live Ability tab is the relevant check.
