Mark Darrah said he would consider cutting or sharply shortening Lost in Dreams, the Mage Tower sequence in Dragon Age: Origins where the protagonist enters the Fade. He called it weak, filler-like content that was completed quickly near the end of development. But his retrospective criticism does not explain why the quest was originally made: the available report gives no original design rationale.

Which Fade quest is Darrah talking about?

The comments concern Lost in Dreams, the dream sequence within the Mage Tower storyline. The player character enters the Fade as part of that quest. It is this section—not the Fade as a whole across the series—that Darrah said he might cut or dramatically reduce.

What did Mark Darrah say?

In a TikTok video asking what he would remove from or add to each Dragon Age game, Darrah, identified by PC Gamer’s 28 September 2026 report as a Dragon Age: Origins co-director, said he would consider cutting or dramatically reducing the dream sequence. The report quotes his assessment: “It’s not very good content. It’s kind of filler. It was definitely done pretty fast in the end.”

That is a blunt, later judgment about the result and how quickly it was completed. It is not evidence that the developers originally intended the sequence to be filler, nor does it establish a particular deadline, budget pressure, or other reason for its design.

Does this explain why the original game included it?

No. Darrah’s comments describe what he would change in hindsight; they do not give the original team’s rationale for including the Fade sequence. The report does not establish whether its intended purpose was story, atmosphere, gameplay, or some combination. So the question “Why was it made if its director now calls it filler?” remains unanswered by these remarks.

What would cutting or shortening it change?

There is a real design trade-off, but it is useful to keep that analysis separate from Darrah’s reported comments. A shorter sequence could reduce a stretch he now considers weak and improve the pace through the Mage Tower. Keeping more of it could preserve its role as a distinct dreamlike interlude. Those are implications to consider, not reasons Darrah gives for his proposal; the report does not spell out a replacement or revised version.

Was his Avvar-origin idea connected to the Fade?

No. Darrah separately wished Origins had included another human origin involving an Avvar in the Korcari Wilds, while describing that addition as expensive. That was a separate counterfactual suggestion—not a proposed replacement for Lost in Dreams and not an explanation of why the Fade quest was made.
