For a first playthrough, play the four main Dragon Age games in release order: Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, Dragon Age: Inquisition, then Dragon Age: The Veilguard. That sequence follows EA’s official franchise listing and avoids making a new player untangle the overlapping events in the first two games before experiencing the series.
Recommended Dragon Age play order
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Dragon Age II
- Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard
EA’s official Dragon Age games page lists these four titles. Playing them in that order is the clearest first-run route: it follows the series’ release sequence rather than asking you to rearrange stories whose timelines do not line up neatly.
Why release order works better than strict chronology
Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II share a universe, but their story periods overlap around the Fifth Blight. BioWare’s official strategy-guide recap describes Dragon Age II as spanning ten years and covering events during and after that period. As a result, treating the first two games as a simple, fully separate before-and-after sequence can make the timeline harder to follow.

For a newcomer, the release sequence is more useful than trying to interleave scenes or events. The official recap establishes the overlap, but it is not a complete event-by-event chronology for all four games. A detailed chronological rearrangement would therefore imply more precision than the available account supports.

Can you start with Inquisition or Veilguard?
Starting with Dragon Age: Inquisition
You can choose Dragon Age: Inquisition as a trial run if you want to test the series before starting with the earlier entries. BioWare describes it as a choice-driven role-playing game in its official game catalog. That description does not establish that it is objectively easier or the best starting point for every player, so treat it as an alternative rather than the default recommendation.
Starting with The Veilguard
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the fourth title in EA’s listed main-game sequence. EA and BioWare announced its worldwide launch for October 31, 2024, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, the EA app, and Epic Games Store. Those were its announced launch date and platforms; they do not confirm current availability in every region or storefront.
