You can download a video in Tor Browser when the site provides a download option or the browser can save the media through its normal controls. There is no universal Tor-specific download method: steps depend on the website and device. If playback fails, Tor Browser’s security level may be affecting media or scripts.
How to save a video in Tor Browser
Start with the video website’s own download control, if it offers one and you are authorized to save the video. Otherwise, use the browser’s ordinary save controls if they are available for that media. Tor Browser does not provide a service that downloads every video, and the exact controls vary by website, operating system, and device. The Tor Project’s Tor Browser manual does not promise one procedure that works across sites.
- Check the site’s controls. Look for a download option provided by the site. Follow its instructions if available.
- If there is no site download option, try Tor Browser’s normal save controls for media the site exposes. The specific menu or dialog can differ, so do not assume a particular button or save location.
- Choose where to save the file using the dialog shown on your device, then wait for the download to finish before disconnecting or closing the browser.
- Do not open the file automatically while online. A downloaded file can make network requests outside Tor when opened in another application.
Tor Browser is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, but the save-dialog sequence and default download location are not the same across every platform or version. See the Tor Project’s installation guide for supported downloads.
Why a video may not play or its controls may fail
Tor Browser’s security level can restrict media behavior and scripts. At Safer, HTML5 audio and video are click-to-play, and JavaScript is disabled on non-HTTPS sites. At Safest, HTML5 audio and video are also click-to-play, and JavaScript is disabled by default on all sites. A site’s player or download controls may rely on features affected by these settings.

Tor documents the usability trade-off: stronger settings can prevent some pages from functioning. If a site does not work, review its security-level guidance before changing your setting. Lowering protections may restore a site feature, but it also reduces protection; do not change the level casually just to download a video. Settings can be changed, and the browser restarted, according to Tor’s instructions.
Check the connection before downloading
Prefer an HTTPS connection, especially when confidentiality matters. Tor Browser’s HTTPS-Only Mode upgrades a connection when the site supports HTTPS. If a site is HTTP-only, continuing means using an unencrypted connection between your browser and that site. HTTPS does not establish that a video is legal to download, that the file is trustworthy, or that it is safe to open. Tor explains these connection protections in its secure-connections documentation.

Keep the saved file separate from Tor’s protection
Downloading a file through Tor does not guarantee that it remains private when opened. Tor warns that documents—particularly DOC and PDF files—can contain internet resources that the application opening them retrieves outside Tor. That application may expose your non-Tor IP address. Avoid automatically opening downloaded files while online; do not open suspicious files, and be particularly cautious with documents that can fetch external content. See Tor Browser best practices.

Do not torrent over Tor. Tor Project warns that torrent applications may ignore proxy settings and make direct connections, revealing your real IP address; torrent traffic can also slow the Tor network. A torrent client is not a safe substitute for a website’s download control.

Avoid installing browser plugins or add-ons to force a download. Tor warns that they can reveal your IP address or otherwise harm anonymity, while changing script settings can break site functionality. If a site does not offer a usable download control, do not trade away browser protections for an unverified workaround. Tor’s best-practices guidance covers both torrent and external-application risks, and its plugin guidance explains the risks of add-ons.
